The Christmas tree.

Even though this has been going on for a few years now, this is really the first time I hear about this new trend. What is it? It is a new take on the traditional Christmas tree that is growing in popularity across department stores, Instagram photos and our homes. It is an upside down Christmas tree.

An upside down tree. Sometimes hanging from the ceiling. Sometimes just standing on its head. Have you thought about how the tree feels about such acrobatics? Trees grow from the ground up. They are not bats. They do not hang down. The top of the tree points towards the Heavens.

A spokesperson for Home Depot mentioned that the trend started in upscale retailers and luxury boutiques, making the trees more expensive. However, with the growing interest of average citizens, such trees are now sold in less expensive stores as well. “People are really gravitating toward them now and putting them in their homes because it’s fun and exciting for people looking for something different” – she continued. Why are we so hell bent on changing traditions? Yes, it is something different and it can make for a gorgeous photo, but is it really something we want to look at for a whole month? Our “normal” Christmas tree can be equally beautifully decorated.

Bonus fact: As I was researching this topic, I also found that it was now fashionable to decorate a PINEAPPLE instead of a Christmas tree.

My Christmas tree is not up yet, but my home sure smells like cedar. (Thank you scented candles!) I close my eyes and I instantly find myself in the middle of an evergreen conifer forest. The smell is intense and it burns the inside of my nostrils, giving me a headache, but I still take a deep breath. It soothes me. It reminds me of all the Christmases when I was a kid when our large family would gather to be joyful together. A lot of things have changed since then… The family is no longer as large. The joy has diminished. But I am determined to keep some of the Holiday spirit within me. The raw smell of the conifer trees makes me feel fresh. I treat the days leading up to Christmas as the time before I am reborn. It is a season of hope. Hope that I will keep on improving upon myself. Hope that my wrongdoings can be left in the past, and I can just carry with me what I have learned from them. Hope that the world gets better instead of becoming worse.
