Ever since I was a young kid, I remember hearing about, and watching various movies about aliens and their surprising trips to planet Earth. While these movies are interesting for a myriad of different reasons, I was never one to spend my time researching all the theories about life outside of our planet, and even outside of our solar system. Let me know in the comments if you are a UFO fanatic or not.
Do I believe in other intelligent life forms out there? I do not know. Why? Because, honestly, I do not care. Whether they exist or not, it does not influence my daily life in any way (for now). I would surely care a lot more if it did. Do not get me wrong, it is very fascinating to learn about the potential for life outside of what we know, but it is not on top of my list of priorities. Today, we will discuss some of the recent attempts at contacting potential life forms outside of our planet, and if they are a good idea.
Have you heard about Elon Musk’s recent idea to send a car into space? Yes, you read that correctly. A CAR. He plans on putting a car, playing a single song on repeat, into a rocket, and launching it into Mars’ orbit. What did this poor car ever do to him to deserve such torture? This event is planned to take place in January of next year, so put it in your calendar if you want to follow the story. On Twitter, Elon wrote: “I love the thought of a car drifting apparently endlessly through space and perhaps being discovered by an alien race millions of years in the future.” Do we not have enough trash around us? Do we now need to send tons of useless things to litter the Universe? But I guess that is what you do when you run out of ideas on how to spend all that money you have lying around.
Just in October of this year, we sent a message to GJ 273b (a red dwarf, three times the size of our planet) containing music and scientific information. The package is expected to be delivered to the potential recipient in the year 2030.
It seems that we are all so desperate to RECEIVE a message in return to those we keep sending out, that we probe anything passing Earth for any signs of extraterrestrial life. In particular, a “cylindrical, dark and reddish, a quarter-mile long” object (think of the shape of a cucumber), which is believed to be from outside of our solar system. Because of its strange trajectory, its speed and its unfamiliar looks, researchers believe it might indeed be a spaceship. The astronomers that first discovered this curious object named it “Oumuamua”, which means “messanger” in Hawaiian. Even though the initial radio observation did not return any sounds indicating life or a message, the plan is to keep listening while it approaches and passes Earth. This engrossing object is still light minutes away from us, which gives us some time to come up with different methods to analyze it in a bit more detail. Surely formal reports will follow. However, I will be shocked if it will prove anything else than just a natural object.
What do all these pieces have in common? They are all about reaching out, sending a message, trying to communicate with something that might (or might not) be out there. Why? What is the motivation behind these attempts? Of course, I understand that we are curious, and we would like to learn about undiscovered things, but why are we not at all afraid? How is it that a vast majority of the Sci-fi movies portray aliens as evil, but when it comes to real life, we seem to think that they will just smile, wave back at us and become our best friends instantly, as soon as they receive our messages? Why are we so eager to have a relationship with an unknown specie if we as humans, sometimes cannot even communicate with each other?
From my point of view, there are so many things working AGAINST us and our message. The Universe is so big that it is entirely possible that there IS something that lives away from our planet. So far away that we would be unable to reach with our message, anyway. And then comes the question regarding how advanced that life would be (more or less advanced than us). Would they even WANT contact with us? Maybe they just like their perfect, quiet, little place in the galaxy far far away (Do I get extra points for Star Wars reference?), and they do not care for anything outside of it? What language are they speaking. If they are so different from us, then why would they communicate in a remotely similar way? Or are we hoping to find lonely humans looking for something else? Would that not be ideal?
At this point, I realize that I have so many questions on this topic that it is almost ridiculous. What I think is also ridiculous is sending those messages. They take a long time (decades +) to reach its destination. We might all be dead by the time it is received and responded to. And if not, we might all go extinct after the message is intercepted and those living in space decide to come and conquer our planet.
So, to any and all Aliens:
Please, come in peace.
If you were to send a message into space, what would it say?
What would you want an Alien to know about Earth/ the Human race?
What would you hope to learn from Them?
Stay golden,
***

That sounds like a great start to me.
Otherwise, it just seems like we are abandoning what we have and are on route to destroy more things.

Fascinating post and I enjoyed reading through. I think you raise a good question in why would another life form want to contact with us. If they observe our behaviours we don’t do a lot to put ourselves forward as any sort of race of beings in any way trustworthy or even agreeable to them. Can you imagine the panic within any society should an alien craft of any sort land among us. The ‘John Wayne’ method would be adopted, shoot first and ask questions later.

Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts. There is a theory that we are just like animals in the zoo – being observed by aliens. So like you said – if they would be aware of us, they would definitely know what we are capable of.
Sending messages is doing without thinking. Oh, yes, the freak out that would ensue…

I always imagined a day where the aliens landed in my backyard, came in had a cup of tea and told me what they were all about. Still waiting…. 🙂

I remember as a kid, some neighborhood kids had a story on “how to get abducted by aliens”. It involved being awake on full moon or something…

I think even now we are being dripped info… if you look at the recent CIA twitter post and the fighter jet videos, “Leaked” recently. The pilot Commander speaking on CNN about his own opinion of it not being from Earth.
I think the public is being drip fed info to stop the panic. I still think there will be a lot of ‘John Wayne’ responses anyway.
Yeah, I am kind of obsessed with the subject. Once you have seen something so out of this world, you can’t help but believe.

Yes, I’ve read about this, too. Sometimes I stop to wonder if they really saw such things and we are silly not to believe it, or if it’s just a way for people to gain some publicity. It sure feels like it sometimes.

there are so many, seemingly believable theories that answer many of those questions, too many to list here and some of which you are familiar with. Netflix currently has Stan Romaneks documentary of his encounters and while it may be a hoax (because who knows!?) it is eerie and very detailed of his nearly 200 documented/filmed encounters. I supposed for extraterristrials were real and I could send a message it would be along the lines of:
“Dear extraterrestrials of earth,
I hope this message finds you well.
My name is Mike of planet earth (includes solar system photo with earth circled and a smiley face). While our human species is advanced and evolved, there are some things we lack that you may have. Currently, pollution is destroying our planet and causing disease among our people. We seek a means to recycle our pollution and means of which to cure disease. Perhaps there are also technologies or ideas we could share with you? Please write us back before coming so we can tidy up.
Best regards,
Mike, human of earth.”

That was such a great message, with some funny inserts. Here’s to hope that they understand what you wrote and will come save us.

For me, aliens will not bother to visit us. Earth is so polluted to have a vacation and they might die like what happened in the movie War of The Worlds.

Interesting. But maybe they would be able to adapt (a filter as a natural body part) to the pollution? But it’s definitely true, why choose Earth if there are so many other places to go.

i really love the fact that so many scientists are attempting to contact aliens. I mean, I think it is very unlikely that we’ll receive a message back, but I appreciate that we’ll try.
I don’t understand the idea behind sending a car out into space though. Elon Musk might have too much money.

It’s funny and you’ve got good points there 😄😄😄😄
We see aliens as the bad guys in almost all the sci-fi movies so why looking for them ?
Yes but that’s just a movie, Aliens might be like those who lived in Pandora (Avatar) they were nice and cute.
And I would care to know what other creatures live out there for the sake of science and Knowledge.
Probably we will never be here to know the answer but maybe they care to know that too, maybe they wish to be sure that they’re not alone. After all they’re creature created by God, so they must have some curiosity too.

I heard about the car going into space and thought the same thing about us humans creating so much trash that we are now at the point to send it into space. I have pretty much the same opinion as you do about sending messages into space, it doesn’t affect me really so I’m not interested.

If it’s just us, what an awful waste of space. It’s from the movie Contact which I never forgot even though I saw it many years ago. I believe in the existence of aliens because the universe is too big and we have seen very little of it. Sometimes I wonder if God is an alien from an extremely advanced race. If I ever get to contact aliens I’d ask them if they have any idea who created the universe, and more importantly, how to make a wormhole so I can travel for free.😆

Your viewpoint is an interesting one. Yes, it seems weird to have just tiny us in this huuuuge place. Regarding God being an alien: who know. It might just be. And yes, traveling for free would be great!

Support SETI yay!! I absolutely love aliens! Haven’t met one yet though.. But if I do, and if they are friendly enough, I’ll ask them for further scientific advancement. I am sure humans are pretty primitive.

It’s curious how “far along” we’ve come in scientific terms, but a lot of people believe aliens to be more advanced. We like to think we’re so great, but that isn’t necessarily the truth.

Oh, that is a great question. I think it should be a group of people from different intelligence agencies from across the world, because they know how to communicate with foreigners and how to diffuse negative situations. Do you have someone specific in mind?

I think the reason we are so obsessed with knowing who, what, when, where and why goes back to the longest running debate amongst humanity ”What is our purpose on Earth?”. Determining one, even two of the five W’s could very possibly tip the metaphorical scale toward science, religion or perhaps create a beautiful balance amongst both. Just because aliens aren’t constantly partaking in star battles over head, doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye, and certainly doesn’t mean they aren’t affecting life here on Earth. Nuclear power and energy has always peaked quite an interest in extraterrestrial lifeforms. There is a much higher number of reported sitings when nuclear energy has a presence. In the majority of cases, the lifeform’s activity has demonstrated a sense of fear towards it – often resulting in disarming missiles and other weapons. So, I don’t think it’s fair to ask Aliens to “come in peace” when us humans are such a hostile species. I think it would be more fair to ask them to bare with us, for they hold the answers and are less likely to reveal said answers to a species that frankly, hasn’t done anything to deserve them.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I did not know the correlation between nuclear incidents and the number of reports on alien sighting.
Humans are definitely curious. Always looking for something beyond what meets the eye.
It was fascinating to read what you wrote. Your finishing lines make it sound like we should worship aliens. That actually has been on my mind before. Even though there already is Scientology that is somewhat based on alien arrival, do you foresee them becoming our gods in the future?

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I think curiosity is in our nature, a genetic prompt that could help uncover our reason for being here, if you will. I do think there should be a higher level of adoration for Alien beings due to the idea that they are what we COULD become, what we are destined to become – universally explorative and evolved. They are so much more advanced than the human race, but who’s to say that at one point their state wasn’t perhaps very similar to today’s human? As for them “becoming” gods, I hope we start considering them as such. I think they have been around since the beginning if our existence, hovering, perhaps attempting to guide. Humanity needs to be careful however, the longer we continue to kill eachother and poison our Earth, they may consider us a lost cause and focus their attention on a new planet. One that has not yet learned hatred or greed, one that is ready, and more importantly, eager to support life.

Definitely an optimistic view, I’d say. Shouldn’t we be afraid? Especially if you say is true – they’ve been watching us from the beginning of times. They know everything about us. And why have they not prevented some cataclysms?
You make it sound like we are contestant on a show watched by aliens. Only one planet will be the winner and get the preferential treatment.
Of course, this is all hypothetical. It’s possible that they do NOT exist, or are less evolved than us. Or maybe we are just “differently” evolved and have skills they don’t and vice versa.
What I’m trying to say is that fear is of the unknown. And since there are so many unanswered questions, I remain worried about any potential encounters on a bigger scale.

If you look at the galaxy mathematically and statistically, you could come to two conclusions: 1) that we are alone in the galaxy and that our planet with our sun in our solar system with our moon are so unique that there couldn’t possibly be other life like ours anywhere else. 2) that we are not alone in the galaxy but that life outside of Earth would most likely not be at all like ours and we wouldn’t recognize it as life if it came up, rang the doorbell and sold us cookies. In the Star Trek and Star Wars universes and in all the graphic novel universes, all the alien life has 2 eyes, 2 ears, a nose, and 2 of each limb. They may have more hair, (think Wookie) or weird stuff on their heads (think Klingon) and have similar modes of communication. Why would we assume this? It is not the most efficient form of existence. How would they find us? We’re like a needle in a needle stack. Also, though I think our planet is amazingly beautiful, these aliens might be allergic to water, or find our air toxic, or wonder why we even have to breathe. They may make the same assumptions we do, that all life in the galaxy looks basically like them and communicates the same way as they do. Why would we use physical means of communication such as sound to communicate with a species in space where sound can’t be heard? Wouldn’t it be better to flash light communication? How would anyone know it was communication if there’s all that light interference out there?
It’s also funny about the car. I just watched a Voyager episode where they found an old Ford pickup in the delta quadrant, and from it traced the trail of rust to the planet that the alien abductors put Amelia Earheart and others they’d kidnapped. I can just see it now though…Flashing Lights–blue and red, from the area around Jupiter heading toward our planet. “You are hereby arrested for littering. Just look at all that crap in your atmosphere and the space junk revolving around your planet! You sent some of that crap around Jupiter and Saturn and out of the solar system too? You know the penalty for this? You know that asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter? We use to call that one Janus… The Vogons are on their way to blow up your planet anyway to build a super highway through that sector. The plans have been on display at Centauri Courthouse for the past 52 of your decades. Ignorance is no excuse. You’ll have to leave.

A trail of rust… that is quite an original Sherlock Holmes type of an idea. You gave me some good laughs with the littering arrest story.
And as far as your first paragraph was concerned – YES! YES! YES! Exactly. It’s hard to figure out pictographs and other ancient languages enough. Let alone one out of this world.
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your fascinating thoughts and ideas.

Wow! I totally loved it. Beside writing articles on social issues I also love these space things though, especially the aliens. And yes! Those aliens might be as dangerous as we can’t even think of, I imagine that sometimes. But I think that it is sort of human instinct to converse with each other, let it be any means, phone call, facebook, or WhatsApp. And this curiousity is always there among us. I guess that’s why we want to know more about the outer world.
