“Only in …”
– writing prompt for today’s CW piece.
On top of the prompt, I was also supposed to use exactly 99 words.
Betty looked in the mirror one last time after washing her hands and before exiting the washroom. As she stepped outside, she reminded herself to adjust her smile, because her life was perfect, after all. Off to hair and makeup she goes. It’s another busy day on set, so she changes her clothes while she walks, absentmindedly almost tripping over her own feet. It looks like they are shooting an ad for lipstick. In the modeling world no one knows about her horrible car accident in which her face got badly burned. Only in the shadows does she cry.
What do YOU only do in the shadows?
The 99 words feeling

Yes, it was something new to me to write within word number constraints, but it was not as bad as I thought it would be.

Only in the shadows do we allow who we are to be seen. Provocative flash!

Thank you! Shadows are a bit of a taboo topic. We associate it with potential risks of bad things happening, but it is also where we seem to be most comfortable.

That’s an interesting observation. Perhaps the masks we wear are in essence our shadow selves. Something I appreciate about literary writing is the opportunity to explore our ideas.

Great. I find flash fiction hard but the more I try it, the more I like it. Well done 🙂 x
