Quotes challenge. Day 1 of 3.

This has been sitting in my drafts for far too long. Since I do not have too much time/ inspiration to write an original, lengthy post, and because my drafts are getting too cluttered, I decided to finally tackle some of the challenges you threw my way.

First things first. I would like to thank:

Wibble

Daisy Mae

Britchy *

for thinking of me, and wanting to see what nonsense I come up with.

These three blogs are so different from one another, that I recommend all of you click and check it out, because chances are, you will find something you like for yourself.

Today, I present to you a quote by St. Jerome:

Good, better, best. Never let it rest. ‘Til your good is better and your better is best.

When I read that line, I thought it must be written by some kind of rapper, or a song writer. It just had such a rhythm to me. To my surprised it is a quote by a priest.

It spoke to me, because I never settle. I do things to excel at them, not just to do them. There are so many different ways to do the same thing, that I like to explore all of the options. Some of them are good, some are bad, but I still try. It keeps my creativity going.

And why would you not want to be the best version of yourself? I know some people, who just want to “do” (vs. do their best). To me, that is the easy way out. But I guess that is the appeal. In their minds, they are gaming the system, by just sliding under the radar by doing bare minimum.

What does it mean to be human? Do we want to evolve, or not? Do we want to be a great specie, or not particularly?

Let me know in the comments how you feel about trying to do “better”.

*Britchy’s challenge had a “The Power Of One by Bryce Courtenay” theme. I believe my quote satisfies that requirement, because it is all about betterment of self. Of One. Am I right?

Stay golden,

Signature.

  1. If you want to keep on doing better, does it mean you’re not really satisfied with yourself?
Also, does it mean that “have to” become a generalist or specialist?
Should I become really good at baking a perfect apple pie or should I be able to make 10 pies which are “just fine”?

It’s a very interesting question you ask here!
Workwise, I have envolved too fast.
Socially, I still have a long way to go.

I have a counter quote for you:

    “From bad to better”. 😉

    1. I AM satisfied with myself, but if I can do better, I try. And then I’m MORE satisfied. You know how when you get a good deal on something and you are happy, but then you find an even better deal? Or when people say that they fall “more and more in love” with someone? The jar is full, but then you realize you can use an even bigger jar to fit things in.
      Does that make any sense?

A great question! I prefer to perfect 1 pie. But once I have some time, I try and work on the other 9. I guess this has roots in my childhood and is based on my education. I was brought up to know something about everything (I’m exaggerating, but you catch my drift). I think that helps you navigate conversations with various people from various walks of life. However, if I was more specialized, maybe I would have an easier time finding a job better suited for me? Now, because I am interested in so many things, I’m not sure what my passions are.

There is always something to work on. Good luck with working on whatever is lacking.

      From terrible to better!

      1. Ha that does make sense.
I guess you just have to be careful with not becoming overworked.

Funny. I was raised up to to be a specialist and I am definitely one. Very few things interest me, but when they do, I want to find about it to molecular level!
Fortunately, I pretty much found my passions.
And I don’t think I will desire anything new for a long time.

  2. I live with this dichotomy every day. I am the one that struggled to accept a C grade being good enough in university. My partner just wants to spend as much time having good feelings as possible, and work is just something that needs to be done. I consider myself a tolerant person, but I have had to learn why holding any expectation of people can be wrong.

  3. I am a specialist in general…or a generalist in special? I dunno. I have a specific talent in Music, but a general talent in learning. I have a specific interest in science and a general interest in EVERYTHING ELSE! I believe there are things where good enough IS good enough. I like the challenge of doing something better than I did before, but it doesn’t require that level of dedication in every one of my pursuits. If I am dedicated to a specific outcome, I want to do my best and become the best me I can.

When I was cooking in fast food (that’s an oxymoron isn’t it?) my whole focus was the efficient running of the back line…I wanted my food to be excellent, my grill to sparkle and everything stocked and ready. I was doing my best because that was my job. When I no longer cooked for fast food, I didn’t really care how fast I could make a sandwich or how clean the kitchen was. It didn’t matter to me. As a financial professional, I will ALWAYS
