CW: An indelible imprint on my mind.

“In exactly 120 words, write about
an event that left an indelible imprint on your mind.”
– a prompt for this week’s CW piece.

We were stopped at the lights, while you pulled into the intersection on your motorbike. Travelling in opposite directions, I wondered where you were going. It was Friday, and I was happy to start the weekend on a high note.

Then a car zoomed past me, going a million miles an hour, making a U-turn in the middle of the intersection. I blinked, heard a bang, and saw you flying into a glass window of the nearby bank.

The lights turned green, and we drove off. I kept checking the news, but I never saw anything.

Sometimes I wonder if you pulled through. If you’re able to walk and ride your bike. Or, if you passed before the medics arrived.

  1. I’ve seen accidents like that and pored over news reports too. It’s horrible to always wonder but I’ve felt like a voyeur too. I detest rubberneckers and always try to pass accidents without looking, the poor people involved don’t need to be my entertainment. I was traveling down to NC with my daughter exactly two years ago and we saw a horrific accident. We came around a bend on 15 in PA and I had to break like crazy to avoid stopped traffic. I got right off the road onto the shoulder because I knew there would be an accident behind us. Sure enough about five – eight cars back from us was hit by a semi as it ran out of room to break. I’d made my daughter get out of our car and we were sat up the hill. Cars were shunted into each other. Glass and metal was flying and I started to cry. I knew people were dying in front of my eyes. The accident was caused by people on our side of the road stopping to ‘help’ an accident on the other side of the road that was already surrounded by cars. ‘Miraculously’ as soon as the accident on our side happened they got back in their cars and peeled off. As the road cleared I insisted we got out of the way so emergency services could get through but I made a note of road markers and the time. I did call the state police to make a statement about what I’d seen later. News reports said three died at the scene and five were in a critical condition after being air lifted to other hospitals. I’ve often wondered about them.
That accident was 100% caused by rubberneckers

    1. I hate when traffic slows down because everyone slows down to look. You’re right – they are not entertainment. But in that instance I was stopped at a light, so that was different.

OMG. That must have been horrific! You can’t help when you put others in danger! Even though I would like to think they had good intentions, but it just proves that not everyone thinks. I’m glad you had the presence of mind to get off the road, and out of your vehicle!

      1. I didn’t mean you, you were unfortunate to have a birds eye view. That’s happened to me too and obviously if we were the only witnesses we’d stop. I have no medical value to add so if there are others stopping or it’s just a fender bender obviously I’ll get out of the way. I just think only people who can add value should stop – or solitary witnesses !

  2. How did I miss this one!
Great piece! Just not sure if this is fiction or? 😉

I promised you I’d look into it and have actually done this challenge as well! Hurray me 😀

      1. Oh wow! That must have scary.

I have passed a couple of traffic accidents, but never seen any victims fortunately.

I am very annoyed by accidents in the traffic. If people could just pay a little more attention.

      1. I wished I’d managed to get to your other posts before, for some reason, I couldn’t so I kept checking back. Today I managed. I’ve had issues since they lost my blog. It isn’t always easy to visit others. Some I follow didn’t show up for 2 weeks, suddenly there were dozens of posts and I check daily. argh!

          1. No, unfortunately, I lost my entire account 1 1/2 years in and started new. It was heartbreaking. Serendipity lost 1000’s of followers. They sold her account name “serendipity” to another. Basically told her, it wasn’t worth their time. Finally after the entire community of followers of serendipity raised an uproar, it as given back. But she’s lost thousands in the meantime. Some haven’t come back. Garry and Marilyn are known worldwide. Prolific writers. They got rid of the daily prompt as well because they wanted to add a program similar to FB thinking they’d draw a younger crowd. Who are you kidding? They instagram or whatever, they don’t FB. They aren’t interested in reading and writing, just facetime. It’s a complicated thing. Suffice it to say, there were many of us lost in the shuffle as we were considered “uninteresting”. We fought back, and some are back, but in the mayhem we all lost hundreds to thousand of followers so if someone unexpectedly disappears, that may be a reason. Other than the ones you mentioned which also happen. Burn out. People just burn out. It happens. I’m here every single day. I haven’t missed a poem or daily post in over 2 years. I just can’t seem to see a lot of people who were following, they have fallen away. When I try to get to their blogs, even the ones I know work, it says they are no longer available. I know they are! We have emailed.

  3. Hi Goldie! I found this writing prompt thru Andrea’s blog The Perks of being Different, and I decided to write something. Here’s the link: http://thehummingbirdsjournal.com/2018/08/09/lost-time-is-never-found-again

I’m constantly reminded to be more patient when driving. I think I finally learned my lesson when driving in and out of school’s parking lots before and after school. I learned that no matter how late I was, or no matter how much I wanted to go home, it wouldn’t be worth it to be in a rush at the expense of my students and their families.

    1. It’s great to hear that the link of prompts goes on. I will definitely check it out.

And you are spot on with the “no rush”. You just can’t be selfish on the road. It’s not just your life that’s on the line.
