“Reflection”
– a prompt for this week’s CW piece.
[Source: iScribIr]
As I step out of the shower
and see the fogged up mirror,
I smile.
My parents always used to marvel
at my bathroom fogging expertise.
“Don’t use your hand to clear the mirror!”
– my mother’s words still ring in my ears
and I reach for a towel to wipe the mirror.
I smile.
The fog in the bathroom is so thick
that the moment I clear the mirror,
it gets covered with mist again.
I continue the battle
with the fog and the mirror.
I sigh.
A cold breeze comes out of nowhere
and envelops me from the back.
I shiver.
For a moment there,
I can see my own reflection,
but something’s wrong.
The mirror fogs back up again.
I sigh.
Another wipe reveals
a reflective surface
and my face.
But it’s not mine.
Leaning in closer,
I see hollow eyes.
A long face.
Sadness
and darkness.
I shudder.
Depression.
It’s always there.
Lurking in the shadows.
Like a basilisk,
hoping you look into its eyes
and get lost forever.
“Not again. I won’t” – I think to myself, as I put on my favorite stilettos and leave the past behind.

Thank you. I struggled with that one a bit, but I’m glad that the essence shined through.

The duality of survival. That’s what I read, the despair hides behind the stilettos.

The stilettos would indicate that Goldie is in fact female, right 007?

The images and attitude in this are just great. Like the way you’re armed (or footed?) With stilettos.

I’d never heard of the basilisk. I personally relate to the emotion in this piece. There have been multiple times when I’ve chosen to be stronger than the sadness/darkness. Great piece as always! 🙂

I had this idea in my head about looking into a mirror. At first, I thought it would be a horror piece. But then I just let it sit. Once I got the “reflection” prompt and started writing it… the idea of depression came to me.
That’s the story behind the piece. Thanks for asking.

Fascinating perspective on depression, and a good way of dealing with it. (“Just say ‘No.'”)
