HW: #ThrowbackThursday; Enticing clientele, or breeding problems?

I remember it just like it was yesterday…

My parents taking me to the dentist for a routine checkup…

Blurrrrrr…

And then us walking out, and me getting fun toothbrushes and flavored toothpaste…

Aaaaand lollipops!

A dentist giving out lollipops. How cool was that?

Even though I look back at those dentist visits with fondness, now, as an adult, I wonder what was his reasoning behind giving out the lollies.

Was it because he wanted kids to like going to the dentist?

Or was he trying to make sure that those kids return to him (with problems)?

Yes, I might have had baby teeth back then, but I’m beginning to think that maybe he is the reason for my sweet tooth. The only problem was that I moved out of town when I was a kid, so if the latter is the case, then he created more business for OTHER dentists.

I rediscovered this guy years later. Still a cool dude and a good dentist. Only now, he gives no lollipops. I am not sure why. I have not asked him.

He instilled my love for Tootsie Pops. They are still my favorite brand.

Do you have a sweet tooth?

Do you remember your first dentist?

Did you like them?

Did they use something to bribe you?

Share some dentist horror stories, if you would like.

Stay golden,

  1. Don’t have really dentist stories. I’ve never been there for a sweet tooth. But I’ve been twice for my broken tooth. Just to add the missing piece

  2. Ah, sugar. I hate that stuff. I don’t have a sweet tooth…
I’ve been to the dentist once for teeth whitening. It was a soso experience. It wasn’t exciting or horrific, just soso. I remember greeting him with a “let’s get this over with” expression on my face.

    1. That’s why people are surprised to hear that you are as young as you are – because you appear to be so much more mature. I’m the same way in a lot of cases.

Even though I had a terrible sweet tooth in the past, I think it has been tempered down quite a bit.

Your teeth do look very white in the avatar picture.

  3. Crazy how that was eh? Where I grew up we would have to wait for a dentist to make his commute to our little town as we never had and still don’t have to this day a dentist office there. Boy, how I loved getting a new toothbrush or a trinket from the dentist back in the day.

  4. I miss the simple life sometimes…win the lottery, who knows, just might snatch up a piece of the world I miss sometimes and ponder all day long. Rolling hills and the ocean as far as the eye can see. Oh, to dream.

  5. Never had a sweet tooth.
Love dentists because I love having teeth. I don’t trust them all. Some care more about making money than saving teeth.
I’ve had a few super cool dentists. I really appreciate the ones who take time to provide in depth education as opposed to the typical, brush twice a day and floss, come back in 6 months type of people.
My favorite dentist ever, was a dental student who was also a military medic. I admired his passion and dedication.

I have a stash of toothpaste, toothbrushes, and floss. For guests and trips. 😇 it may or may not be a little hoarding situation. But like so said…..

    I like having teeth.

    1. You are so right about dentists not being all the same. I went through a fair share of them, too. Some knew what they were doing, some not so much.

Having a stash for guests is a great thing to have. At least it provides a good hoarding excuse.

      Teeth are good.

  6. I remember my first dentist; Mr Goodfellow. Really nice chap. He never offered me a lollipop (I don’t resent him for that, I don’t think it was a ‘thing’ here in the UK). He did fill a whole lot of my teeth, which has contributed to my tooth problems here in the latter part of my existence… but I don’t blame him for that, he was only following what was considered best practise back then to fill even the tiniest fractures in teeth, whereas these days it’s understood that maybe that’s not such a good idea after all.

I wouldn’t say that I have a ‘sweet tooth’, though I am a sucker for chocolate (a habit I’m trying to break, as the production of chocolate is not at all environmentally friendly).
