CW: A completely new person.

“A plastic surgeon changes more than the appearance of a policeman.”
a prompt for this week’s CW piece.

Anna restlessly sat on the couch.

On and off.

On and … off. And then on

and off the TV went again.

She tossed the remote to the side and got up to get a snack from the kitchen. Pulling the fridge door open, she stuck her head in, wondering what she had a taste for. Once her nose started feeling cold, she capitulated and slammed the door shut. She wasn’t hungry. She was just trying to get him off his mind, although she knew it was a futile task.

Her thoughts took her back to the doctor’s exam room, where she sat next to Adam holding his hand tightly.

“You’ve done a great job losing all that weight” – she remembered the doctor saying.

The multiple surgeries were not going to be easy, but they all thought it would be worth to get rid of all that excess skin weighing on the body, giving the patient a whole new life.

They’ve been together since high-school and she was more than willing to nurse him back to health, but he refused.

“My mom is coming into town, she will stay with me and she will take me to all the postoperative appointments. Please, you need to go” – he said before they took him off to surgery.

Anna nodded in agreement, knowing how tough the journey had been on him. He didn’t want to be ashamed of being fat any longer, but most of all he didn’t want HER to be ashamed of him. She never was, but she understood his pride, so she kissed him good-bye and left the hospital only turning back when she was outside.

From the hospital she headed straight for the airport. Even though she was all packed for her foreign assignment, she was ready to stay if only Adam said the word. But this was all pre-planned. When she found out that she was going to go to Europe for a year to map out the market for her company’s product, Adam was overjoyed. Not because they were going to be apart, but because he could finally undergo his transformation without burdening her. She was going to see him before and after. And after was going to be spectacular.

Fastening her seat-belt on the plane, she reassured herself that everything was going to be alright and that Marilyn was going to be there for him. A mother’s care is beyond special, after all. Yes, Anna would have to forego seeing her fiance for a little while, but she knew that once they reunited, a whole new life would await them both.

But now that she was back from her trip, Anna could not wait any longer. She slept off her jet-lag, unpacked and did laundry. It was time to go see the love of her life. She was nervous. Aside from some scars, she did not know what to expect. He refused to send her any pictures. Even while Skyping, he would only show his face.

“I’m coming over” – she texted, put her shoes on and left her apartment.

Once on his doorstep, she inserted her key and turned it to the right. She paused. Her heart was racing. She was nervous, but also excited. She missed him like crazy.

She pushed the door open and saw her beloved right in front of her.

“Anna” – he said surprised.

“Adam. Wow” – she said not able to take her eyes off of him.

“What are you doing here?” – he asked.

“I came to see you. I texted you. I couldn’t wait any longer.”

“I wasn’t expecting you.”

“That’s alright” – she whispered, and took him by the hand, pulling him towards the bedroom.

“Anna, don’t…”

But it was already too late. Anna walked into his bedroom and saw a slender brunette handcuffed to the bed post. Only then did she notice the police hat he was wearing while otherwise naked.

“Adam?” – she asked with her eyes pleading for a reasonable explanation.

“I’ll be right back” – he said to the mystery woman, while pulling Anna out of the bedroom.

“Don’t ruin this for me.”

“What?”

“Tell Vicki you’re my sister or something. I don’t want her to leave yet.”

“Wha… What is going on? Is this a prank?”

“Nah. I’m just enjoying life. Finally happy. Finally free. People see me. Not as an obstacle, but as a stud. The ladies love my washboard abs.”

Anna didn’t know what to say. Her tears streaming down her cheeks.

A new life. For him and her, but not for them. He was a totally new person. Literally.

  1. Good story, but Adam was a nasty piece of work. In fact the clues were there when he was ‘overjoyed’ that Anna was leaving for a year… so I’m not sure that he really was a completely new person except for physically. I have a feeling he may have been bored of Anna and his new body gave him the opportunity to do what he really wanted to do i.e play around a bit but keep Anna dangling… I enjoyed the read!

    1. Interesting perspective. You’ve got an eye for detail. You’re a photographer after all.

Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts as always. I hope you’re having a great week.

  2. You become better and then you forget the people who stood by you when you were at your lowest moments. I’m guilty of that, although my case isn’t related to my physical appearance.

This is well written, Goldie! As always, it’s hard to predict your story’s ending. You’re like a pro when it comes to twists.
