CW: It is time to run when two moons rise.

“Two moons rise over a darkened field.”
a prompt for this week’s CW piece.

His heart was racing. As blood dripped from his knife, he looked back on all these years of fantasy when he had imagined killing so many different people in so many different ways. He’s been suppressing that side of him ever since he was a little boy. It started innocently, with fly killing and chopping off heads of grasshoppers. It then progressed to small rodents and onto cats, which were his favorite. Others thought they were cute, adorable and meant for Instagram, gifs and memes. But not him. He could feel the supernatural aura around them. It was pure evil. He had to neutralize them so he could live safely.

As he marveled at his work, he saw the moon rising from behind the horizon. And then a second one.

Two moons?” – he wondered, vaguely remembering reading a story about a  17-year-old who triggered his wolf curse when he accidentally killed one of his friends during full moon.

If full moon can trigger a werewolf curse, then what will two moons do?” – he thought to himself, imagining his coronation as King of the World.

“Put your hands up and step away from the body!” – shouted one of the police officers, while the other switched off his torch.

Only one moon left.

Seth looked down and saw Sandra’s bludgeoned body.

What happened? How did I get here? Was I following the killer’s footsteps?

All these questions circled inside Seth’s head with mad speed, until the police tackled him to the ground.

He saw the bloody knife fall out of his hand. He should have known better than to pick up evidence, unless… He wondered if indeed he could be the one who killed her.

No, it was not him. It could not have been. He is not capable of even hurting a fly.

And then it hit him. It might have been Zane.

It must have been Zane.

Thank you for coming in so late, Dr. Ordi. What can you tell us about your patient?” – asked the cop whose moon went out first.

I cannot be sure of much, but I know it was not Seth who killed that young woman. It could have been Zane, though.

That’s what he keeps saying, too. But we only found his fingerprints on the murder weapon. Plus, who IS this Zane that you are intended to blame it on?”

Zane is the shadow side of Seth.”

The blank stare on the officer’s face made it obvious to the psychiatrist that the police was not filled in on all the details.

I treat him for DID. Dissociative identity disorder. It means that Seth is a host to different identities, which can come and go without him knowing.”

  1. What a gripping tale! And a creative take on the two moons! That DID thing was a little disturbing but I’m gonna search more about it.

  2. Bludgeoned would indicate blunt-force trauma. The bloody knife indicated sharp-force trauma. Sharp-force trauma might fit better with this type of murder since the perpetrator is a dark side of the host and may be murdering for a different purpose than his light side can understand. It is not in the result which is a dead victim, it is in the process, the actual act of murder that has the more profound effect on his dark side. But then, as far as I know, I haven’t murdered anyone. (mwahahaha)

    1. Thank you for keeping me in check. However, this time around bludgeoned was the word I wanted to use. Maybe I should have mentioned the bloody rock nearby, or the custom made knife handle. I wanted this to be a gruesome kill. I imagined the killer stabbing the victim and that beating it a bit on top of it.

  3. Very interesting story, Goldie. I’ve heard of this DID thing about a couple of times. I think it’s a creepy disorder.

Let’s assume that Seth here has a different identity, and let’s just say that it’s one of them (Zane) that killed Sandra. Do you think Seth should be charged with murder? Or should he be sent to a rehabilitation center? Which one do you think is more logical?

    1. Creepy indeed. It’s a disorder that professionals are having trouble understanding and treating. It’s fascinating to me.

You pose a very important set of questions. Since Zane is a part of Seth, he definitely needs to be punished. It’s not easy to discern how intertwined the personalities are and how much the main host knows about actions taken by the others. I think a combination of both – formal punishment and rehabilitation needs to be applied.

      How was the beginning?

      1. I never thought about that before. I’m not very good with classification… Unless it’s glaringly obvious, something like sci-fi or fantasy, I couldn’t identify it for the life of me. But what do I like reading about in general? Love, death, fear; and possibly some degree of madness. All of which I write about. I’ve yet to write about DID or evil cats though. One day. 😜

          1. Oh my gosh that’s genius! The cat isn’t a member of the illuminati, it’s his alternate! Er… Uh… Heh. 😅
Not really the novel-writing sort. Hey, maybe you should. I’d love to see what you can do with a DID cat. 😸

  4. I agree with you. A combination of both is best in this case.

The beginning was fantastic! Forgive me for not saying so in my first comment. I’d planned to say so, but I just got carried away with my questions for you. You had my unflinching attention from the very first sentence!
