HW: #ThrowbackThursday; 2nd blogging anniversary.

(This is my 300th post!!!)

As you have probably deduced from the title, DailyFlabbergast (i.e. this blog) is now two years old! I cannot even begin to express how happy, proud, and positively surprised I am that I have reached that milestone and that you are celebrating it with me.

Admittedly, there were plans for more fanfare, but due to a busy period at work, I was unable to plan and execute what I wanted. I hope that you stick with me without the glitz and glamour that is normally associated with blogging anniversaries. It reflects my personality. I much prefer quiet gatherings with a group of close friends than an over-the-top bash filled with strangers, who came in only for the bling. You might know that I am not really a New Year’s resolutions kind of person. I do not like to start something new just because of societal norms. There will be cool things to come, but they will be rolled out … not today.

My WordPress account was born on April 28th, 2017. It took me over two weeks to figure out a theme I would not mind using, customize it, and introduce myself to the blogosphere. My initial post, explaining the purpose of this blog, was posted on May 13th, 2017. Looking back, I am actually pretty impressed with myself. I must have really craved an outlet. Actually, I know I did.

How long have you waited after creating an account before you wrote your first post? It seems to me that blogging is often a spontaneous decision. People have something they want to share with the world, so they create a blogging account and write the first post as soon as the account is confirmed and verified. I consider myself a spontaneous person, but I think this time I was right to approach it in a methodical way. There were a couple of blogs in the past that I created on the fly. I had an idea that I needed to get out, so I created a blog and wrote about it. Chances are I wrote something the next day, too. But I have stopped pretty soon after. It was just a whim.

THIS never was a whim. I have toyed with the idea for a while. Weighing all the pros and cons. Finally, the scale tipped and so the account was created two years ago. I made sure my website was nice, clean, and functional before I wrote anything. I did not want people to flock to my site only to turn right back around. The visual aspects of this blog have mostly remained the same throughout the years. Nothing is perfect, but 2 years later, what I have is still the best I can think of (theme and customization wise). (Tips for new bloggers: View your website the way other people see your page. Often times people forget to clean up their widgets, edit their About pages, or choose conflicting colors for backgrounds and fonts.)

As expected, I had no views in the month of April in the year of 2017. However, unexpectedly, I had seven visitors in the month of May. I wrote seven posts. Those seven visitors viewed my blog fourteen times. In June I had 10 visitors with 4 posts, and in July, I had 20 visitors with 5 posts. You can hardly call this inspiring, encouraging, or motivating.  But I persevered.

Once I discovered Community Pool in November/ December of that year, my numbers started going up, reaching an ultimate high in February of 2018. Because I was on a computer hiatus in March, my stats dipped that month but rose again in April once I returned. (That actually made me super appreciative of the blogging community. I received a warm welcome.) Unfortunately, because I was going through a pretty big move and some life changes, my stats started dropping in June, as I became pretty irregular about writing, reading, and interacting on WP. Once I was ready to get back in the saddle, Community Pool was canceled, and many of my blogging buddies left never to be seen again.

My stats are not as good as they have been in my heyday, but they have finally stabilized. I attribute it to my more organized posting schedule. Blogging still provides me with a surge of adrenaline when I open WP. Once I hit “Publish”, my head starts spinning, while I wonder who will say what. There are certain people that come back to every post of mine and I am deeply grateful. Thank you. You keep me going. It is not only about having my writing complimented on, or agreed with. I truly enjoy conversing with you and learning about your likes, dislikes, and experiences. It enriches me.

The blog started with NROP (News Related Opinion Pieces), shortly followed by CW (Creative Writing) posts. Last year I was proud of adding the HW (Hashtag Week) and Award posts. This time around, I celebrate the beginnings of a phenomenal collaboration – BT (Blogging Tips). In addition to all sorts of Q&A in the Award posts, I also decided to introduce a new award I give to my supporters – The Stormer Award. There is only one given out every month, and there are strict rules for obtaining it. If you would like to be in the running, make sure you join in on the conversation whenever I post.

How long have you been regularly blogging for?

What are some of the most illusive countries for you?

Do you have any suggestions on how to get people from foreign countries to visit your blog?

Stay golden,

    1. I like keeping people on their toes.
It’s surreal. Yes, it seems like I’ve been blogging forever when I think back on some of the people I’ve met 2 years ago that are no longer here. But the time has gone by incredibly fast.
It’s interesting to think back to the beginning and how life was back then.

    1. Thank you.
It’s not that much compared to those that have been blogging for 7 years and more, but I am proud of my consistency, and plan on continuing this journey for the foreseeable future.

  3. “People have something they want to share with the world, so they create a blogging account and write a first post as soon as the account is confirmed and verified.” That was me. I find it much easier to write than to do anything technological.

    1. I can understand that.
Even though usually I am able to navigate through technology pretty seamlessly, that’s exactly why I focused on the logistics first. There was a chance it would take me a while, and I knew that once I started writing, I would have no time to mess around with the tech portion of it.

    1. I’m so happy to see you back. *knocks on wood, etc.* It’s weird when your blogging buddies just disappear one by one. Sometimes it makes me feel like a dinosaur. Sometimes it pushes me to keep going.

      Thank you!

  4. Congrats on the mile stone!! I think I created my blog on a whim. I don’t remember doing much planning for it. It was during the teacher strike. I wrote like 5 posts dedicated to being a teacher and then started writing about other things. I want to say that I’ve been blogging with consistency since April of this year. It’s interesting to look at blogging through the country stats. I hadn’t paid much attention to it. The elusive countries for me right now are from South America. I think that one of the things that helped me get more views from other countries was using Twitter. From there, I saw interaction from places like U.K., Italy, and other places in Europe.

    1. Thank you!!
I wish us both a long, amazing blogging adventure.
Thank you for the Twitter idea. My posts are set to automatically post there. I have not paid much attention to that platform, though. Since I forgot my password, I have not visited it once. I should really try and recover it…

  5. I started my blog almost 11 months ago. I posted my first post immediately. I’m still a very small potato in the popular niche my blog resides in and I’m 100% okay with that. To a degree, it actually takes some pressure off.

      1. Thanks! It took me 3 years of thinking about starting one before I did…getting started on something is usually where I drag my feet. I’m usually fairly disciplined once I commit.

  6. Congrats on your blogging anniversary, Goldie! Cheers to more wins!

It’s funny that almost every blogger I know started posting a while after they created their account. I created my account mid September 2017, but I only started posting actively in November that same year. My blog will turn two years this September, but I’m nowhere near your achievements. I truly admire your consistency and commitment. Your consistency inspires mine.

Isn’t it funny that the only African countries that REALLY read my blog are Nigeria and South Africa. I get about 70% of my views from Europe, South America, and Asia. It wasn’t always like that, though.
I remember I started getting views from the US when I started interacting with you and your followers. I guess when it comes to advising you on how to get views from other countries, all I can say is, “Build deep connections with bloggers from those countries” and maybe write about topics that are trending there, too.

    1. Finally. Everyone before you said that they created their account and posted right away.
I think your blog is doing pretty well. There’s always room for improvement, and so it’s good that we get motivated and inspired by others around us.

I think the time zone has quite a bit to do with the views. I wonder if there’s anyone who re-posts their content every couple of hours to make sure they stay current around the world.

Thank you for your recommendation. I do aspire towards this. And not only for the stats. That’s just the byproduct. But how do I FIND people from those countries in the first place?

      1. I also think the time zone plays a part in our blog views. I was even reading something related to the topic topic. The article I was reading advised us bloggers to be mindful of the countries that read us the most and their time zone. It mentioned how the days we have as weekends vary with the country. Until today, I didn’t know that Thursday and Friday are regarded as the weekend in Saudi Arabia and some other countries. So, we’re advised to post our best posts between Mondays and Wednesdays if our biggest audience is Saudi Arabia.

Concerning your question, I truly don’t know. Sometimes I wish WordPress had a “search by location” feature.
But maybe things would be easier if everyone had a “country tag” you can add to your posts before publishing them. I used to add the “nigerian-blogger” tag to my blog posts. I think it’s why even to this day, people say they come across my blog whenever they search for “Nigerian bloggers” in their Reader. The problem now is making EVERYONE see why adding such tags is very important.

        1. I had no idea about SA, either. Fascinating.

That would be a great idea if we could search by place. I sometimes search by subject, hoping that people write about their countries, but often times I was too late. People go on vacation, but by the time they post and I read it, they are back home…

          1. The same happens to me. Very few bloggers write about their country, even.
I think it would be nice if WordPress had that “Search by location” feature. It would also be nice if it had a “Nearby” feature that lets you find other bloggers close-by.
Damn! Why didn’t I think of this when I made that post about how WordPress can be improved?
