CW: It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over.

“Write a story inspired by the word “clone.””
– a prompt for this week’s CW piece.

Upon Damian’s return to his tiny one-bedroom apartment, he slowly lowered himself and sat down in a wooden chair in front of the window overlooking the alley. Whenever he sat down, or stood up, or even moved, the chair creaked as if it was to fall apart any minute.

The life of a resident” – he said to himself, trying to recall how much longer he would have to pay for his medical school before he could start living like a real doctor.

Damian cracked the window open and poked his head out. The alley was dimly lit, allowing for only slight shades to be seen. Rats were feasting on scraps. No humans were in sight. It was late. It was quiet. It was just the way he liked it.

I’ll think about debt and money tomorrow. Right now, I will celebrate, for today was a successful day” – he thought to himself with a smile.

He sat in silence for a while, reliving the events of the evening, nodding to himself with pride and admiration.

They’re so gullible” – he muttered, pulling out his cell phone.

It was Cassie – the hot librarian from the next town over. She wanted to meet over the weekend, but Damian was not ready. They have been chatting for a couple of weeks now, and he really started to like her, but he knew it was not yet time.

Vanessa left him brokenhearted. They had been together for over three years, when she suddenly announced that she was seeing someone else and moving in with them. In London.

Damian still could not forget how it felt. That is the reason why he has only been casually seeing people he met via the dating app for the past few months. He could not get his true love back from overseas, but he was going to make sure that the locals would not get away from him.

I’m on call at the hospital this weekend. My schedule is crazy. You know, the life of a resident. But I would LOVE to finally meet you in person. I’ll reach out when I get my schedule for next month” – he wrote back to her and placed his phone on the windowsill.

He pulled a cigarette out of the half-empty pack, lit it up, and inhaled deeply, relaxing into the chair that creaked louder than usual.

Damian knew he had to pace himself. He could not afford getting caught at the hospital. If the injections disappeared more often, an investigation would be launched, and he did not want to take these chances.

Pressing his barely smoked cigarette into an ashtray filled with mangled cigarettes, he stood up smiling. It was a good day for him. 3 AM. Time for bed.

***

The time has finally come. He was going to meet with Cassie in the evening. They agreed to meet at a nearby bar, which also served some tapas. Damian rolled his eyes when he thought of how trendy these little dishes were, but smiled smugly. It was going to be his night. Another one of those. They were happening pretty regularly lately.

Cassie was supposed to be wearing a red dress, and have a red flower in her hair. In the picture on the dating app, her hair was blond, but the only girl in the bar wearing a red dress and with a red flower in her hair was a brunette. Damian was a little bit disappointed, but he walked in confidently.

She twisted her head to the side, looking out the window. He recognized her features, but he was not sure from where.

What a pretty face” – he thought to himself, closing the distance between them.

When she turned around, Damian gasped with terror. Bianca – the girl he murdered two months ago, was sitting in front of him.

He could not form a single word. His body froze, rendering him unable to flee.

Well, hello” – she said with a smile.

Was it possible?” – he wondered if maybe he didn’t inject her with enough poison.

Things are not always what they seem” – said the brunette as she got up from her stool.

My real name is Nora and you are under arrest for the murder of my sister – Bianca” – she declared, pulling her handcuffs out of her thigh holster.

  1. Totally wicked ending. I was thinking deep horror not twin sister lol. Really set Damian up as a creepy guy that might have lost his real love because (a) he’d killed her too or (b) she worked him out real quick and fled.

Now I’m thinking Bianca has stalked him via the dating app too… implication there is he’s used it for maybe multiple murders!! hmmm, see how this piece has got me overthinking!

Super take on the prompt word. I’m off to add it to the entry post right now!

    1. I thought about it. A psychological thriller. But I think that would be a much longer of a story.

It’s great to hear that you enjoyed it.

I tried to drop little nuggets of information here and there that could be put together by the reader after the tale was done.

Now I am off to read the other entries.

      1. Ha, ha…I’ve had many conversations on short stories that almost beg to be something bigger! Trouble there is after 6 months 6 books are waiting to be written!!

I’m still pondering mine, but the rest are fascinating takes on the prompt. It’s getting to be almost a family of writers with so many returning each month!

        1. Indeed. This is my second “writing from prompt” community and I’m quite enjoying it.

I made it a point to NOT read other entries before my own. I do not want to be influenced one way or another.

That’s exactly my problem – I have a longer form that I should start editing (i.e. rewriting), so I try to keep the prompt ones… prompt. LOL
Plus, long form on blogs is not all that popular. I actually have a lengthy attention span (compared to others), but I cannot read thousands and thousands of words every day. I can only imagine others.

          1. Ooh, what other prompt community are you in? I’d be interested in taking a look too.

I hear you on not reading others first too. It’s a good tack to use. Alas being an admin I feel obliged to before adding links to the entry post. That said if I was organised I’d write mine first as I know what the flipping prompts are lol.

Long form on blogs…you’re likely right there. I try and avoid it too as it’s more likely to be book material and spoilers aren’t a good idea there!! Prompts keep me thinking too, often back story to ideas in my case although I know a few that are twisting them into short story serials. Fascinating to see how each writer uses them methinks

            1. The Carrot Ranch. 99-word prompts every week. I do recommend it.

It does make sense that you read before you post. However, the disclaimer of “their views don’t reflect mine” that you already have on there should be sufficient for you to just glance over the submissions.

When I was reading other submissions yesterday, I noticed that people do turn these into a series. Quite interesting. However, I enjoy coming up with something different every time. Turning the monthly prompts into one big story would probably put a bit too much stress on me at this time.

              1. Thanks for that and I have heard of Carrot Ranch as a few people I know do post for it too. I’ll have a deeper look this weekend.

True re the disclaimer, but me being me I do try and read everything and comment too. Must up my game on social sharing too, my bad! Mind you, if the contributor list grows that might get harder so glancing might have to occur.

I think that’s the beauty of prompt writing too. We can all take different directions depending on time and personal situations. I’ve done a few that roll on from previous ones and some that are linked to WIP’s where I’m testing characters, scenes or back story. That said turning it into a big story would sure stress it up right now too!

  2. Wow, wow, wow.

I am a bit late, but I agree with all the comments above!

About 4 months ago, I got my eReader. I must have read 20 books or listened to them as an audiobook.
I am not an expert, but I can tell that you got that writer quality!
The flashbacks. The original types of names you choose. The unexpected events.

    Have you ever tried audiobook?

What is your opinion about writers without any formal education/ writing course?
Do you think practicing and reading books is equally enough to make someone a writer?

    1. Thanks, Andrea!
During my annual Block Party, many people recommended I try and aubiobook. What did I pick? “Anna Karenina”. It’s a lengthy one, and so it’s been taking me forever to go through it. I find that I can only listen to it when I’m driving. Otherwise, I get too distracted. Another negative point is that I checked out “Brothers Karamazov” from the library, but I cannot read it, because I get plots mixed up with the audiobook. It’s my mission to finish the audiobook, but it probably won’t be my go-to format in the future.

When do you listen to these audiobooks.

Your words are very humbling. Much appreciated. I started looking for someone who can design my cover, but it seems rather expensive if I want my cover to be something unique. Do you know someone who is good with photoshop and knows how to design stuff? Formating a book for publishing can be hell. Editors are super expensive, too. And finding an agent is a nightmare and like a lottery win. There’s A LOT of difficulties to face. But I will overcome them. One day at a time…

I have no “formal” writing education. Sure, I had some classes in college, but they seemed too rigid and I don’t remember them being helpful at all. I don’t remember anything about them. LOL Although, I have written A LOT of essays for uni.

No, I do not think you need all that. I think it’s either in you or it isn’t. You can choose to foster it or not. Like you said – it’s about practice and reading. Your writing really expands the more you do it. Your creativity widens and you get to know yourself more. What you like, what you dislike, what you’re better at, etc.

      Do you want to start?

      1. Hahah. For a first experience with audiobooks, Tolstoy is very ambitious!
I have made several attempts to read the book, but I simply couldn’t.

I love to wake up a bit earlier, drink coffee while listening to a book before work.
I probably listen to at work to and in the evening when I am doodling. And then again before I go to sleep.
        I am completely hooked!

I unfortunately hardly know any people, let alone anyone skillful with photoshop.
But you did give me an idea.
I became very interested in this type of creativity. I actually just find an app where you can design book covers.
I still have to explore it, but I will try to make a few for you CW posts, pretending it’s a book.
It’s more to explore my own creativity than anything else!
I can show you some and then let’s see if you like it 🙂

I have become quite tempted of being part of bookclub or writing course lately.
But then again, that involves mingle with people……… 😉

        1. “Mingling with people” ha. Last year, I went to a write-in during NaNoWriMo. Basically, writers gather at a specific place to write at a specific time. I went in and walked right out. Some people tried to chat each other up, some didn’t, but I didn’t like the feel. I like writing by myself at home or in nature where it’s quiet. I did think about joining some sort of a club in my area, and even found one last year, but I never went. Not sure why… I think something came up and then I forgot. There’s way too much going on right now for me to consider it. Let me know how it goes if you decide to join. You know how in movies you see AA meetings? Most of the time they say that you don’t have to talk until you’re comfortable. That’d be my wish. I imagine I’d feel weird among people with decades of experience and all sorts of books published.

  3. Nice job! You were effective at altering my perception of the main character. I began the story rooting for Damian, but as soon as I read “They’re so gullible” I immediately stopped trusting him. (In afterthought, ‘Damian’ also has a villainous sound to it!) As the story progressed I theorized he was making “unauthorized” clones or some such related nefarious activity, and thought his meeting up with others was a way for him to collect cells. Discovering what he was really up to caught me by surprise on one hand, but on the other it made perfect sense!
One editorial note: (although the juxtaposition made me laugh!) “Things are not what they seem,” she SAT as she got up…. 😉
If I may horn in on the comments above, you inquired about a cover designer. I’d like to suggest VilaDesign.com. She’s the designer I’ve been using and is more affordable than a lot of them. Enjoyed the story!

    1. Thank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts. It was fascinating to read about your thought process. That’s exactly what I wanted to hear – that it wasn’t as black and white as one might think.

Your editorial note is much appreciated. I got it fixed.

And thank you for your cover design recommendation. I will definitely check it out.

      Stay golden!

  4. Ah, that was a killer ending! (Pun intended.) Caught me off-guard — I initially thought that maybe he was gaming the system as a clone himself. I really liked how ‘off’ the character felt — I could tell something was wrong with him, but you kept me guessing until that big reveal — the way you dropped it was fantastic. Great story!
