It’s Monday morning and Goldie is ready to fold. Mental health day.

As you might have already gathered from the title, this is not going to be a NROP.

The reliable Me wanted to write the usual – Monday morning post and discuss our society based on a piece of news. That part of me even had a great article to share. But the other Me decided that today was not a good day for a NROP.

This is not the first time I struggled between writing and not writing a post while adhering to a schedule. Every single time, this year, the part of me that likes challenges and loves to write would win. What was so different today? I felt like my mental health alarm just went off on its loudest volume setting. This cannot be ignored.

Instead of skipping this post altogether, I thought of all the times that writing helped me through a rough time. While I was pondering this post, the latest BT post came to mind. Apparently, a vast majority of You, my dear Readers, like pictures and gifs in blog posts. What a perfect way to satisfy the part of me that is done for the day, and the one that wants to connect with the WP community.

Last night, I went to see the “Joker”, and I am pleased to say that those of you who recommended it to me were right – it was a good movie. Admittedly, my mood was a little off after seeing the movie. What did it mean to me? One of the things that spoke directly to me was that the society expects us to “Put on a happy face” and never take it off.

Put on a happy face.

Is my smile big enough for you?

It is my hope that people watch it and understand that pushing people towards happiness is not always the best choice. Even though we see the main character laughing, and we see his exaggerated smiles, he admits to never being happy in his life. How sad is that? How would you feel if you found out that you made others live a lie by “smiling”?

“Morning person” is definitely the wrong label for me. If you talk to me during my first hour of work, do not be surprised if I give you the cold shoulder.

Why is it socially acceptable to be a morning person but not a night owl? I feel like another extrovert vs. introvert discussion. Why do I always have to be in the basket that is deplored by the rest?

Madness, I tell you.

I consider myself somewhat tech-savvy. Most of the issues I encounter, I fix by myself. If you work in IT and get a call from me, prepare for a tricky problem. I will not call you for something that can be solved by restarting my computer. It gives me great pleasure when these people learn something new from a problem I throw at them.

Have you ever called customer service only to be put on hold for an hour?

And then you get a call on another line, so you go to pick it up because you’re on hold anyway. And within seconds the customer service disconnects. What were the chances of them coming on the line at that specific time when you switched over?

Now, you have to call them and wait another hour on hold.

We had some updates going on at work over the weekend, and you know what that means – problems galore. While the rest of the office was running around, unable to log in to anything, I was busy customizing my new desktop/ programs/ etc. Have you ever tried to fix something and you ended up breaking something else?

Somehow my cursor disappeared and I could not get it to show up again (yes, I unplugged the mouse and plugged it back in). Thankfully, a hard reset brought everything back to normal.

In the middle of all the computer issues, I got a call from a co-worker that wanted to meet right away.

I thought it was going to be a simple exchange of documents, while we would pass each other in the hall, but nope. It turned into a sit-down meeting. The folders and stacks of papers kept coming and showing up on the desk in front of me. By the end of the meeting, I felt like this:

Of course, everything is due yesterday.

I was ready to scream.

Traffic, computer problems, chatty and demanding people. All before 9 AM? On a Monday? Can’t take this.

There was no way I could write a post I would be proud of amidst all that. Hence, this post.

Writing this post and searching for these various pictures, enabled me to calm down. I pushed all the nonsense aside to focus on this post. It invigorated me.

I can only hope that you enjoyed this post.

How are you today?

Can you relate?

  1. Once the pictures all loaded, it made me laugh quite hard.
All the memes are so old school.
I remember get from work and a friend I were so excited because we were going to spend half the evening on 9gag 😀

As a morning person, I have a hard time understanding who others cannot be the same.
I actually started asking in the start of my courses 😉

Calling IT is more annoying than me fixing the pc myself.
A hardware problem, you probably have no choice.
But spending half an hour with someone from India who will tell you to restart the computer is UGHH.

Love the cactus pic! Reminds me of my old cactus design!

    How am I?
Read the last few lines of my email.
I can tell you that it was a DISASTER. Total F* up. I don’t what to do anymore.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I was worried you’d get frustrated with all the loading.

Ideally, I would not start work before 10am. I’m mostly a zombie before.

Yes, I do remember your cactus doodle, now that you’ve mentioned it.

It’s been a crazy day, so I haven’t had the time to check email yet, but I will.

              1. It seems to be cyclical for me. When I’m going through a rough slump, everything seems to go wrong—and then the opposite when I’m going through a high period. Many days fall smack in the middle thoygh—they are just days, not particularly good or bad.

  2. Isn’t it unreal to expect others to never have a change in mood? Embrace this aspect Goldie, you never know what you’ll discover, when you’re honest with yourself in these periods of melancholy.

  3. The night owl thing annoys the heck out of me. I don’t think it’s right that it’s more socially acceptable to be an early riser. I remember reading that study about how it might be a genetic thing – you’re predisposed to being either an early riser or night owl, and that your work place should take that into account. Apparently night owls should not be forced to wake up early, it screws up their brain, like forcing an early riser to stay up late. Like you, I’m hardly coherent at work until at least 10am and after 2+ coffees. Coming into work early for meetings at 9am just about kills me. (I usually wake up naturally around 8.30, while everyone else in my family is buzzing at around 6am).

I actually come to work an hour after everyone else and leave an hour after everyone else – I just find it too hard to get up in the morning. My parents tell me I need to stop staying up so late, but I do my best writing at night, it’s how I’m wired. And I ain’t gonna be sorry for that lol.

    1. I nodded the whole time as I read your comment.
The annoying: “Go to bed early”… I actually tried that. I just cannot fall asleep earlier, so I end up tossing and turning until I fall asleep at my usual time. I was told I need to get my body used to that. I tried. For years. No, it did not work. There are times when I get really tired and go to bed early. Guess what happens then. I still don’t want to wake up in the morning.

I got in to work today, hoping for a peaceful morning and within 5 minutes of me being there, I have a person come up to me with a million of questions. I tell them that I am not even wake this early. What do they say? I’ve been here since 7. How is that relevant?

  4. I’m really shocked by a number of pictures in a single post! It’s not you so I completely understand your Monday was extremely harsh 🙂 But I’m really proud of you and I admire your consistency. You didn’t give up on a first corner. You could skip writing a post, but you didn’t. You’re a great example for all of us!

  5. I enjoyed this post a lot and relate 100%. I too have had my battles with technology, fixing, breaking and then fixing again. As for the emotional part of this post, I feel you there too. My last post was similar regarding “life” as a writer/blogger. Love your use of the pics and gif’s. Here’s to a happy Thursday. God, it’s only Thursday!!!

  6. Really glad that you ended up enjoying your time with Joker. It really does conscientizes the audience, if the audience is ready to read between the lines and understand the role that society plays on everyone, especially does with mental illnesses or a really tough upbringing. I love that it’s expected to be “normal” or “happy” when we’re not. It’s such a toxic way to behave and is bound to bring some to break.

    1. Another blogger mentioned how there were people who laughed with the Joker. There was a couple next to me that was laughing, too. Maybe they were too young to recognize the struggle. I feel like the movie was lost on them. There was someone who was audiable during the killing in the apartment scene. Surprisinly enough, there weren’t that many people in the audience when I went. The majority was quiet, throughout. I think the Joker was impactful.

  7. I am a dichotomy. I do my best work at 5:00 AM when it’s quiet. I nap in the afternoon, and then I’m writing and creating, and composing, and solving the world’s problems until 2:00 AM. I HATE coming into work all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and being confronted by a night owl who can’t solve the simplest of problems and blames it on the hour of the day. “After all,” he says, “I didn’t go to sleep until 11.” What? You wuss! You got your 8 hours of sleep! I got here an hour before you and I got 4 hours of sleep! “Wait, what? You’re a night owl? I thought you were a morning person.” I am. Both. Not so good in the afternoon though. Don’t ask me to figure out the software that allows me to do my taxes after 2 pm. There will be tears, and throwing things, and broken glass. Of course, I give most of my music lessons between 2 and 6 pm. Poor kids.

    1. People might not want to hear it, but we all are down in the dumps sometimes. It’s only human.
Can’t complain about this week. It’s been decent so far. Hope you made it home safely!
