“In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about the Day of the Dead.”
– a prompt for this week’s CW piece.
[Source: @CarrotRanch]
“Trixie, get up! It’s the Day of the Dead!” – Bart exclaimed, pulling a blanket off his sister.
He has heard so many stories throughout the years but was never allowed to participate in any of the festivities. This year, he was finally old enough. He turned ten in August, and his mother agreed that this year was going to be “the year.”

“Is that… Dad?” – Bart asked Trixie.
“Yes, it is” – she replied.
“Why can’t he see me?”
“Watch this” – said Trixie, pushing the mug off the table onto the floor.
“They’re here” – he said with a smile.

Very clever. Your ultra short stories often remind me of reading a poem, as there is a hell of a lot of content expressed in just a few words…

Thank you, Stuart. That’s quite the compliment. This one was hard for me to edit. My first draft half way done had way more than 100 words.
Are you a Halloween/ Dead of the Dead/ All Saints’ Day person at all?

That was very poignant, very unexpected but very charming

I inspected right through the early elections here and on the big one – can I say total farce?! I’m trying to set appointments to view houses next week – I wasn’t watching what I was typing and autocorrect added ‘in mental’ after appointments…. I think big brother is trying to get me committed.

No improvement on the eyeball front. The sclera contacts were a bust so there’s nothing that can be done about the astigmatism. I wanted to try prism lenses for the Diplopia but they keep faffing about wanting to try other stuff and I’ve lost faith. I’m waiting now to find a new eyeball doctor after we move because I’ve paid for enough BMW’s for doctors this year!!

😦 That’s too bad. I hope that once you move something will improve.

I enjoyed that one very much. It gives just enough to make me want to know more.

Thanks!
It was quite challenging for me not to write out the whole story. By keeping it 99-words long, I kept my version to myself and allowed the reader to think of their own backstory.

Very well done on that. It was fun to fill in those blanks.

I missed reading your CW (yep, that’s right. I’m using your acronyms now). They always leave me with questions.

🙂 That’s great to hear. Hopefully, you will have some more time now to read and write. Stay golden!

Good stuff! How do you decide the names of your characters in your stories? I feel like it must be quite a challenge for writers in general! 😮

Thanks, Lashaan!
Interesting question, which I HAVE been asked before. That either means that you are curious or that my name choices are fun. Or both. I choose to think it’s both. Most of the time, the names just “come to me”. However, sometimes when I am looking for a more stereotypical name (to fit character traits), I ask others what name comes to mind when they think of person who is this or that way. That doesn’t happen too often, though. I never checked, though I hope that the names do not repeat themselves.
