NROP: Do you taste that cow with your veggies?

Sometimes there is not much to write about. However, today, things are quite the opposite. There are so many fascinating things going on in the world that it took me a long time to figure out which topic I would dive into on this blog. It probably took longer to settle on a topic than it will take me to write this post. How about that?

There was a time when I thought Burger King’s (BK) burgers were 100 times better than the ones from McDonald’s. Once a year or so, I get the BK Whopper in hopes that it will taste as great as it did all these years ago. Unfortunately, it never does, and I am left dissatisfied. A couple of months ago, my partner and I decided to grab a quick lunch at Burger King. My order never varies, but it is interesting to look at the menu and see if there are any ridiculous new items offered. (Like Cheetos fries that came out a couple of years ago, which I tried but did not like.) Before I knew it, my partner asked one of the employees what the “Impossible Whopper” was. The weird thing was that I knew what it was but was not sure where I knew it from. It might have been from when I was researching meat alternatives for one of my #TuesdayThoughts post about the logic behind meat-like non-meats. Or maybe from when I wrote about a social media vegan guru who turned out to be a scam? Is our brain not phenomenal at storing and recalling information?

If you did not know before reading this post, you should know by now that the Impossible Whopper is a plant-based burger meant to look and taste like the beef one, but include no meat. I laughed when my partner quickly shot down that idea after hearing what it was.

Have I had a burger that was made out of veggies? Yes. Have they tasted the same as the beef patties? No. Did I like them? I think one was decent, another one was alright, but others were terrible. If I wanted a vegetarian/ vegan option, I definitely would not go to Burger King. Still, I thought it was kind of them to try and be inclusive (or jump on the idea of potentially making a little extra money).

BK tried to accommodate people who do not eat beef, and now they are getting sued. Once again, we are shown why we cannot have nice things. People demand things to be tailored to their every need, but then they go and find a fault in it. After reading the news about the lawsuit against Burger King, I wonder if maybe some people live to sue. Maybe people sue nowadays just to get their five minutes of fame. Perhaps there are businesses that help you come up with reasons for soliciting? (I got this idea trademarked, so do not go on stealing it!)

What is the lawsuit about? A vegan man is suing Burger King because their Impossible Burger was prepared on the same cooking surface as beef burgers. Because of that, he claims that the non-meat burgers are coated with meat matter. (The author of the linked article claims to be pesce-pollotarian. What happened to the days where you would just say: “I do not eat beef?” Why do we have to put a label on everything? I thought we did NOT want to be labeled?)

What exactly is an Impossible Whopper? Burger King’s website says that it “features a savory flame-grilled patty made from plants topped with juicy tomatoes, fresh lettuce, creamy mayonnaise, ketchup, crunchy pickles, and sliced white onions on a soft sesame seed bun. 100% WHOPPER®, 0% Beef.” It is the last statement that has people riled up. But notice the “creamy mayonnaise.” That is not vegan. There actually is no promise of this burger being vegan or vegetarian. One can, of course, order the Whopper without mayo. One can actually order it without the meat coat, too. Right below the description, there is an asterisk that states: “For guests looking for a meat-free option, a non-broiler method of preparation is available upon request.” I guess the man that initiated the lawsuit did not read that disclaimer.

The reason why this burger is called Impossible is that BK partnered with Impossible Foods. Their mission includes the weirdest of sentences. “(U)sing animals to make meat is a prehistoric and destructive technology.” I never thought of making food as “technology.” Once you start browsing their website, you find out that the way they make their alternative burgers definitely qualifies as technology. You can read a little about the plant-based burger being genetically engineered here. You might be surprised to see the length of the ingredient list. Only because it is made out of a plant does not mean it is better for you. If you look at the nutritional values, you will see that there really is no health reason to eat the veggie option over the beef one. In fact, they have “less protein, a lot more sodium and, of course, more carbohydrates.”

I am a meat lover, but I do not complain if my steak is served with a side of veggies. I do not sue the restaurant because the meat touched the broccoli. Why is a veggie burger coated in a little bit of beef fat such a big deal?

Yes, plants are better for the environment because they do not fart as much as cows do, but does that mean that we should kill all the cows?

Will anything be ever good enough?

Do you ever struggle with an abundance of things to write about?

How do you decide which topic to pick if there is more than one that you are interested in?

Have you tried the Impossible Burger? If yes, what did you think? If no, would you?

If you are vegan/vegetarian, what precautions do you take when eating out to make sure that your food is not contaminated?

Stay golden,

  1. I am not a vegan/vegetarian now, but if I were I wouldn’t be eating at BURGER King. It’s common knowledge that fast food restaurants and grills generally prepare lots of stuff on common surfaces. Beyond this particular issue, you can’t control what you get at a restaurant 100%. The reason veggies taste so much yummier out than at home is because they put a little butter and sugar on them. Ooooh! To control what you eat more carefully, eating at home is best (and cheaper too).

    1. I guess I must be privileged, because I never thought much about prep surfaces at fast food places. But of course the kitchen space in most restaurants (let alone a fast food joint) is limited. Different things are being flipped with the same thongs. How much time would a chef have to spend if he was to put a utensil down and pick a new one every time? And how messy things would get!

Of course! When I go out, I choose to be ignorant. What I don’t know can’t kill me. Well, actually, it can, but at least I will die without knowing the disgusting truth.

I hate the addition of sugar. It brings out the color, but I do not care much about it. Butter, on the other hand, I cannot get enough of.

Your advice is spot on. Life gets too busy/tiring sometimes, though.

  2. Q1. I rarely struggle for material to write about, I do struggle with giving a shit enough to write about the world of absurdities.

Q2. I’ll write about each one if they prove to be interesting enough or dumb enough.

Q3. I have not tried the impossible whopper or burger, I probably won’t either. I’m kinda like you, Burger King has taken a nose dive in quality over the past few years.

The only way I’d ever eat vegan was if my wife was a vegan!

    1. I hear ya. There’s so much ridiculousness in the world that sometimes it gets too overwhelming. But we at least have to try.

So if you have a few ideas at a time, will you just sit down, write a few posts and post them straight away?

I’d glad she know better. But it’s nice of you to say you’d follow her into the darkness of no meat.

  3. I mostly don’t eat meat. I don’t label myself as any particular thing either; I agree that people’s tendencies to label is creating limitations. I prefer not to eat meat because I don’t like the taste and I don’t like factory farming. When I want beef, which is rare, I buy free-range, humane kill. As to what to write, it ebbs and flows. Sometimes the ideas trip out and I end up overwhelmed by all the partially started posts. Other times, the well is dry.

      1. I mostly never liked it. Even as a child. I find fat distasteful and the taste and texture don’t wow me. It was exacerbated by the eating disorder so over the past few years I’ve tried most again to see if it’s a dislike or an ED thing; it’s mostly a dislike.

  4. I doubt things will ever be good enough for some people. Re labelling, I hate it. I should write a post about that. You know what, one day if we both write posts about it I’ll write it. I feel that people label and define and then miss out on all other options. Random thought.
Anyways….. what’s up with 2 posts today? Am I missing something somewhere? (I thought you did a different kinda post on different days, not that I remember what/why/when/where, though I should probably pretend I do recall the details).

    1. You’re right. Someone will always want something more. You give them an inch and they take a mile…

I wrote about labels in the past a couple of times. I’d be curious to read your take on that.

Yes, normally there are different posts on different days. The last Monday of the month and the four days after that are a bit different, because I have the #HW. When I first introduced it, I wasn’t sure if my usual reader base would like it, so I wanted to keep my usual posts and add these on top. I might change that next year, though, because it can get overwhelming for me to write that many posts during the last week.

      1. You can fiddle about with various options and see what works for you… to be honest I just read what you write and have no clue when is what, although by now I should be getting the hang of it! (which I haven’t)
I want to write a real post about labels one day. I’ve so much to say! It just, why would I share my random opinion kinda thing if it’s not something nice, or inspiring, or going to make the world a better place, or something I want to rant about. Though even rantabout posts I try not to do (I password protected my last post coz’ it seems like it was seen as a real rant, and I don’t want to be spreading negativity if it isn’t going to help me or anyone else). Though maybe if I have the headspace one day I can write a post that may be helpful. I just need the motivation to actually do so. And here I’m off rambling again…..

        1. Just FYI:
I tried posting this under your now-private post, but my reply was rejected. Probably due to the new post setting. This is what I wrote:
“Yes, I was able to see the comment in my Notification menu. However, when I tried to read it on your site, I could not.

Yes, we all have biases of sorts, but it doesn’t mean that one bias is necessarily better than other. We all walk different paths.

I really like long comment replies. It sparks new thoughts. Keep glittering!”

          1. Thanks! Yeah, I did put a password on. Thanks for your thoughts… that’s why I didn’t want to keep it public because they’re not necessarily better or worse just because of all I feel due to my experiences.

            Keep sparkling 🙂

        2. As far as this comment is concerned, I wanted to tell you that because life is not all sunshine and rainbows, I don’t expect everything on the Internet/blog to be that way. Our blogs are places which we should be able to rant about anything. It helps release our emotions and it helps structure some thoughts. When you write it down, it’s easier to understand them than if they were just in your head. Sharing these thoughts with others has the potential of sparking a debate in your head and see things in a different light. Even the darkest of posts has its benefits, because it might make someone feel like they are not alone. Like they’re not the only ones who think that way. There is always SOME benefit in every post. It’s up to your audience to decide. But it is up to you to find your audience.

          Like

          1. Hmm. I hear ya. I think that if there’s a purpose to it then yes. Some of my darkest writings lead to the light. I try not to share it if it doesn’t though on occasion I still will. Sometimes though negativity just gets you stuck there. And also, except that I can’t remember what I was saying. Yeah, maybe that I don’t want to portray something and give someone a view that isn’t true. So if I love flowers people reading my love of it will think maybe there’s something to love. I wouldn’t want to be the cause of anyones negative perception to anything that I don’t think is negative – even if I want to rant.

I love devating and arguing things. And I’ve definitely found a purpose in sharing the darkness, for the support, suggestions and knowing others relate helps. I’ve never found a purpose in sharing other things, and as I said I wouldn’t want to drag others down.

It’s up to your audience to decide. True. I don’t find my audience. To be honest. But you may already know that.

  5. I have yet to try this burger, but I do like the fact that they are trying. They never claimed it was vegetarian or vegan, just that burger itself wasn’t made with beef. I think it’s a nice option, if edible, to not consume so much beef and to attempt going a slightly healthier route. I do agree with you, though. I recall the BK burgers of the past were flame grilled and juicy, but nowadays they’re possibly flame grilled and dry, like McDonald’s burgers used to be.

    1. I feel like they’re just reheated in a microwave.
Ultimately, it is up to us to figure out what we are eating, what we want to do and why. I feel like the whole vegan/vegetarian thing is more fashionable than anything.

  6. I do not sue the restaurant because the meat touched the broccoli.
    That made me laugh 😄

    But then:
Why is a veggie burger coated in a little bit of beef fat such a big deal?

I am not sure why, but it has always been a big deal for me. I am very bothered by the sight and smell of meat, unless it’s a fancy restaurant. I guess it’s just something you set your mind to and you don’t really want to change it.

I wish those fast food place could just not exist. There is one MCD nearby my house and it’s where all shouting school children and drunk people after a night out meat (intentionally misspelled 😉).

    Have you seen “the Founder”?
It’s a movie about how MCD grew big and it is a bit soul crushing.

    1. It’s so great to read that someone laughs/smiles as they read my stuff. It’s so hard to express humor through words. I struggle with it on a daily basis in the outside world, so to see it work sometimes here is magnificent. Or maybe I just need more people like you around me.

I wouldn’t think that you smell the beef fat on the veggie burger, but I might be wrong, since I personally have not tried it and don’t feel like doing so just for the sake of the post. Although, maybe I should have… Well, it’s too late now.

I know what you mean about the smell. Pork can definitely have quite an offputting one. It depends on the quality of meat and how it was stored and prepared.

Ha! Now your intentional misspelling made me smile. Well done.

No, I have not seen the movie. It looks interesting. Would you recommend it?

      1. Heheh. I appreciate your humor greatly and I am glad you see humor in my writing/doodles. Not many people understand the “Royal-Tea” doodle and I have often heard my humor is “different”, whatever that may mean 😉

I don’t know if you spell it. It’s just the thought behind it. For me at least. I have just gotten so used to not eating meat, I don’t ever consider eating it.

        I would recommend the movie.
It shows the truth we secretly all already now. The person who should be getting the reward, never does. Not when there is a screaming/shouting/attention seeker close by.

Another movie I once watched about the same kind of topic is “Flash of Genius”.
It’s about the inventor of windshield wipers, but a big ass company takes his honor.

Isn’t that we all experience too many times?

        1. That’s true. They heme they use is mirroring the meat heme. It has a bloody color and taste. Supposedly. That’s exactly what I discussed in one of my earlier posts. If vegans/vegetarians don’t want to eat meat, then why do they insist on their food tasting and looking like meat. Ethics and logic. You know?

  7. The cow-farting comment had me laughing out loud hahahah I swear, the whole veggie-era can be quite face-palm’y. I mean, there are veggie options that are wonderful and all but come on, some people can be quite extreme about. I love my meat and if I don’t get meat when I want meat, people will be turned into meat! Great discussion post, Goldie!

  8. As H L Mencken was wont to say ‘For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong’ (and that probably also applies to the taste of most veggie burgers 😉 If going vegan, for whatever reason, is your thing, go for it. But if your reasons are environmental, the science would suggest that substituting plants for meat is a very mixed bag when it comes to environmental impact.https://www.sciencealert.com/vegetarian-and-healthy-diets-may-actually-be-worse-for-the-environment-study-finds
