NROP: Don’t We All Deserve Security?

Celebrities are not my favorite breed of humans. Yes, this is me generalizing. I am aware of that. Of course, there are celebrities who are great people. Probably. I have no way of verifying that statement, but there are ‘the good’ and ‘the bad’ in every group. Or so we are told, anyway. The reason why I am not a fan of celebrities is because they are often put on a pedestal and worshiped as if they were gods. As a religious person, I refuse to recognize and/or hail any other “gods” than Him, but that is beside the point here. Celebrities are just like the rest of us – imperfect. And if they are like us, why should we look up to them more than we do to our family members, friends, or neighbors? Sure, they deserve some sort of credit for “making it,” but I often wonder how much of it was luck and how much was actually hard work. There are so many good, talented people around me that might make for better celebrities and role models and yet they live out their lives mostly unnoticed.

It feels a bit like a waste to see these ‘celebrities’ squander their chance of making a real difference in this world. (But what does a ‘real difference’ even mean? It is so subjective…) I go back and forth when it comes to the responsibilities of a famous person. Yes, they should use their status/ fame/ money to do good, but they should also have the freedom to do whatever they want and even fail. Like every one of us. Human. Remember?

Celebrities often complain about the amount of pressure they feel from their fans and the world around them.

Think about the pressure in your life right now.

How many people are influencing your decisions directly or indirectly?

How many opinions are you trying to satisfy with your actions?

Chances are you have family, friends, co-workers, etc.

Still, I hope the number is relatively low, because otherwise… I do not envy you. However, whoever you are, I feel that the number is more than one, which means that you are not the only one you consider when making decisions. Be it something simple like choosing what to have for dinner, or something a bit more complicated like in which direction to take your career.

Now, imagine that the number of people who “know” you is multiplied by… ten… thousand.

Naturally, with that many eyes on you, you might find it harder to make up your mind, even when picking an ice cream flavor. I am sure some of your Instagram followers will be appalled by either the flavor you select, the place you get it at, the way you eat it, etc. Not everyone is prepared for that kind of scrutiny and that is OK because we all have different levels of physical and emotional resilience. It is fair to say that we often do not know what to really expect until we are already submerged. However, there are various things we can, and SHOULD do, to prepare ourselves as soon as we approach the stormy sea.

The moment you meet a Prince (not Prince Charming; an actual Prince), you should be aware of the fact that you might have to live in a Kingdom and follow the rules within. Since not many of us will get the opportunity to live that fairytale, let me bring it down a bit. In the world of dating, meeting the parents of the person you are seeing is an important happening for a reason. You are worried because you are not sure if your values and ideas will fit in with theirs. Different families have different quirks, which you might have to end up accepting and even employing in your future life. Is that something you are prepared to do? Couples break up over family issues all the time.

Has anyone ever heard of the dreaded mother-in-law?

Some people might have it easier than others to get along with their partner’s families, but there will always be the need for some kind of adjustment. It is a normal part of life whenever we live our home (literally and figuratively) and visit another’s.

Reasonable enough, right? Well, then, why is Meghan Markle acting so surprised? She got the Prince, got the status, money, and fame, and, once she found out that she was going to have to pay for it by giving up a bit of her personal freedom, she freaked out and fled, fracturing the Royal Family. She could not handle adhering to rules that would be imposed on her by someone else. Yes, the tabloids might have been brutal towards her at times, but she did not become famous overnight. Press is something she should have gotten used to in her days as an actress. Did she think that by becoming a Princess she would be able to push that away? That would be quite a privilege, but I do not think she is that stupid to have believed that.

“The biggest concern was while we were in Canada (…) I then got told, short notice, that security was going to be removed. By this point, courtesy of the Daily Mail, the world knew our exact location. [Oh, no! The horror!] (…) the world knows where we are, it’s not safe, it’s not secure, we probably need to get out of here.” Prince Harry to Oprah during the recent interview.

Now, after moving again (from Canada to the US), she is complaining again. The reason for it now? Not receiving the same benefits as the rest of the Royal Family, namely security. Are you serious? I can no longer hide my distaste for this woman. She is nothing but a spoiled brat. But, I do give her credit for going after what she wants. It has served her rather well so far. I do not think that either one of them thought it all through but I am glad to see they are giving the real world a ‘go’. Since the couple moved into their California home, the police had been called nine times to their residence for different reasons, but mainly alarm tripping. Meghan asked The Family to let them keep around-the-clock security. I wonder how a British citizen would feel about their taxes being used on the personal protection detail for a family who, for all intents and purposes, denounced their British background.

Moreover, she is bitter about Archie not having a title. I understand that. No matter how hard I try, no one outside of my home wants to treat me like royalty. But then again, given the option, I probably would not turn down living in the British countryside surrounded by luxury.

Both Meghan and Harry admitted to being blindsided and shocked that now they have to pay for things themselves. How atrocious! Because of that, they are selling their lives and souls to the likes of Oprah and Netflix, which in turn, shines more spotlight onto them, which, supposedly, they are trying to avoid. That also gives more potential for negative perspectives to come to light. Sounds like a vicious cycle to me. Are they too blind to see it? Or too blinded by the shine?

Why is it that celebrities tell us how to live their lives (unafraid, unprotected, going around hugging everyone) and yet, when they are faced with the mundane issues (like security), all of a sudden, they need a whole army to protect them? It does not escape me that high-profile people might have more people trying to get to them but that does not mean that the average Joe deserves less protection.

These people are so far removed from real life that they should just stay in their own bubbles instead of preaching to us about things they have no idea about. Hypocrisy at its finest.

  • Should Meghan and Harry get Royal security back?

  1. As always, good food for thought. And once again, we are on the same page. I have always thought Megan Markel was just a gold digger, but I guess she is a gold digger to w whole other level. I guess now the gold she found just wasn’t pure enough. 🙂

    1. I think it’s this sense of entitlement that some Americans seem to have nowadays. It’s as if they think their way is enlightened more than the ways of others (in this example the British Royals).

      You put it well. 😀

  2. You made me laugh with the “I can no longer hide my distaste for this woman”.

Living as a royalty is not easy. There is so much etiquette to think of.
While it is old school, I don’t think we should tamper with traditions like these.
And if you are not 100% sure that this is a lifestyle you can live, you shouldn’t even try.
Sure princess Diana has proved that everyone.
But I guess Megan still wanted to give a chance.

The only reason why I would want to be a celeb is for the money. Living without any financial insecurities would definitely make me a happier person.
But they got plenty of millions together.
They have their own little family.
So honestly, what more does a human need?

So should they get their Royal security back?
No, they can buy their own security I reckon…..

    1. I don’t enjoy keeping up a tradition just because it’s tradition. However, I also don’t like overthrowing it just because it’s tradition. There has to be a reason for it all. And yes, some traditions are just super cool and timeless.

You make a good point with Princess Diana. I think Meghan thought that we live in different times and she would turn things around singlehandedly. How naive…

I’m with you about the money. No, it does not buy you happiness, but it definitely helps with at least the basic stuff (like food, shelter, security, etc.)

If the British taxpayers would be forced to pay for their security (I don’t think it will happen, but who knows), then the British people should ask the Royals to pay for THEIR security in exchange. It would only be fair. Right?

Also, don’t they have some sort of charity, etc. It’s very noble of them to give money to others but if they don’t have “enough” for themselves then what does that mean? To me, it means they live off other people’s money, they donate other people’s money and THEY get all the credit for doing the “good work.”

      1. It might be different times, but it’s same old bat on the thrown. And she refuses to give up.

Money would buy me happiness, but that’s a discussion for another time.

Instead of increasing security, I think we should focus on descreasing crime.

I also thought the Royals are pretty useless, but Jasper convinced me otherwise. He said that they help to make a lot of business deals between different countries happen which then results in job opportunities. There’s something in that.

        1. So, Queen Elizabeth is not a role model, I see?! I Have to say that I find her strength quite admirable. But I do know what you mean in regards to passing on the torch.

All in all, a monarchy is not something we see a lot of these days and I have to say that I would like to preserve it, even if a tiny bit, for generations to come.

  3. I can’t relate to their pressures and I never find it wise to compare to bounty/stress of my life to another, but I wish them the best.
I don’t know her as a person to have an opinion on her character, but in the realm of public icons and their security needs versus the “average Joe”, I would say; yes, they need more security.

Let’s take us bloggers. This post dabbles on both sides and might not be enough to drum up any strong feelings for/against, but many have stronger beliefs, sometimes unpopular ones. With 10,000 followers, still, we are ghosts by comparison. Look at icons who share strong beliefs and wanted to practice what they preach on tolerance and love; Dr. King, MK Gandhi, John Lennon. Good or evil doesn’t seem to matter, if you have strong beliefs and create powerful emotions, you will generate hate.

Moral of the story, if you have strong beliefs that you are vocal about; people will dislike you. If your passionate about your message, say that numbers goes from 1,000 in the audience to idk 10,000,000. Statically, how many of those people are off-their-rocker enough to take action? To say, “they don’t know what it’s like to have nothing and I have nothing to lose – so I’ll show them.” Or numerous other situations outside of “people are crazy” aligning with political maneuvers, or being inconvenient towards some other financially driven motive. That’s before getting into ransom situations for having a prince where as someone like myself is less worried about being taken hostage.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Ghandi.
They are beautiful words to live by and I’m sure he has no regrets. It’s easier said than done and I do believe famous people may wish they could return to the days of anonymity. So they encourage you to hug and love one another, because if they did, some nut-bag might shoot them because of a song they wrote…

    1. You’re right – it’s easy, but not always accurate to compare ourselves to others. It’s actually something I refuse to do and tell others to stay away from. However, I find it a decent tool to use when trying to understand others. I can’t walk in their shoes, but I can try to understand. I can totally understand their point of view (probably not the magnitude and details, but the gist of it, at least). My question is – with all their ridiculous complaints, are they trying to understand US? Why should this be one-sided?

Oh, trust me, I, on this blog (or by visiting others) have generated plenty of hate.

So, the conclusion is that a Prince needs security? Well, looks like Harry should have thought about it before detaching from everything else.

  4. When the interview aired, there was quite the debate here on WordPress. I’d never heard of Megan Markle (had no idea she even married Harry, nor that he ever married). Yeah, I live under a rock. Deliberately. I got informed about both sides of the coin (hate them/love them) and for myself? Just like most other celebrities, I find that personally, I don’t give a sh*t about what they do. I just wish they’d STFU and go away. With all the money that particular couple has, they could buy themselves some really high-grade security. If they’re paranoid enough to think someone is going to come to kidnap their child or harm them. This might be a valid concern, I’m not famous so what do I know about that? My own opinion is that the majority of people (in my opinion) wouldn’t know those people if they fell over them in the street. I sure wouldn’t. And there are a lot more important ‘worries’ in the world than two overindulged and neurotic celebrities whining about being slighted. For me? I just don’t care.

    1. Your comment just proves that you have more important things to do than to track things that have no impact on your life. Kudos to you. I have to admit that I don’t know many (if any) people like you.

STFU sounds like a great advice. I’d back you up on that 100%.

      1. Thank you for the nice compliment. You can now say that you know at least one person who refuses to ‘stay informed’ about ‘important’ events such as rich twits throwing a tantrum. Didn’t we as Americans just live through FOUR years of that crud? It’s so last year! 😉

  5. As someone who does not keep up with the royal family drama, I found this an interesting and informative read. While I personally don’t know enough about Meghan to make any kind of assessment of her, I have to agree with you that celebrities encourage the rest of us to let our guard down far more than they would ever dream of doing. It’s like political elites who tell us that defunding law enforcement will somehow not compromise our safety. That’s all very well and good for them when they have personal body guards, but most of us rely on regular old 911 for our emergencies. (Side note: while police misconduct warrants addressing, this should be pursued without eliminating security in the meantime. Simply cutting the number of officers employed in a district does not make the district safer.)
All this to say, the double standard is unfortunately something we see a lot in society. I truly wish we could let our guard down more often. I wish I didn’t have to worry about walking back to my car alone at night in the city. But I do. Not because all men are monsters, but because it is a fallen world where human traffickers, racists, and all other predators exist. The celebrities know this. That is why they insist on having their security.

    1. I kept nodding as I went along reading your comment. So true.
It got me thinking… if politicians/ celebrities know what’s what and they make sure they do whatever it takes to be protected and do whatever they want, why do they tell us that the sky isn’t blue? What’s their motivator for that? Are they plotting our demise or can there be a less dangerous reasoning?

  6. Never really cared for all this royalty praise nowadays but I can’t blame some for looking up to them just like how I look up to Batman. 😛 People who get in the spotlight should know what it means in an era of social media… There is no privacy and it’s up to you to show the world that you care or not for certain core values often praised by citizens…

    1. Batman saves people. What do Harry and Meghan do? (or any such celebrity/royal)

It definitely a tight rope for them to follow but they have far more resources to deal with things, should they fall apart, than an average Joe.

You and I are most definitely on the same page, here. Apart from your spelling of ‘neighbours’, that is 😉

Should Meghan and Harry get Royal security back?

As a UK taxpayer and someone who believes that the UK’s Royal Family outlived its usefulness long ago, my answer to that is “Hell, no!”. I’ve no doubt they have sufficient resources to pay for whatever security they feel they need.

          1. I was kidding. Certainly nobody I know takes offense at being called a ‘Brit’ if they’re English. Maybe the Welsh, the Scots, and the Irish do… and to be honest, I wouldn’t blame them because of the way that the ‘British’ government has focussed mainly on London for such a very, very long time.

            Liked by 1 person

  8. Hmm. I didn’t interpret their comments about security being removed as being motivated by a feeling of entitlement. I interpreted it as being shocked/hurt that the royal family didn’t believe it was important enough to continue, despite Harry’s (and Archie’s) royal lineage. Flipped: imagine something DID happen to Archie because of a lack of security—would the royal family care? Would they feel guilty for not having attempted to prevent it by retaining security? That issue aside, I generally like Megan.

I think if we dig down into anyone’s life, we’ll find plenty of things about them that will irritate us. I understand what you’re saying about the majority of celebrities, and don’t necessarily disagree with your assessment, but I don’t usually devote much thought or energy to keeping tabs on their lives or whatever nonsense is spewing from their mouths. I see them as providing me entertainment on demand—as soon as they stop being entertaining, I change the channel.

    1. Well, sure. But if Harry wanted to cut all royal ties and get away from all the related duties, why would he still benefit from all the perks that others who fulfill their duties do? Family matters are often complicated.

You’re right. I don’t either, but when I browse through headlines in search of an interesting topic, sometimes my blood just instantly boils. I definitely stay away from “the news” more than back I the day, but I have to have SOME insight.

I think your “entertainment” comment is very on point.

      1. It wouldn’t be “all” the perks, just security, which I kinda agree with providing. I mean, US presidents receive secret service protection for the rest of their life after leaving office, unless they opt out. I see this as similar. While they may not be active members of the royal family, they still ARE members of the royal family.
