It’d been a long day for Teddy – first classes, then homework – when all he wanted to do was watch Power Rangers. He hoped that dinner would consist of chicken nuggets and fries so he could devour it quickly.
As luck would have it – baked salmon and pea puree. Yuck!
Defeated, Teddy moved pieces of food around the plate.
“Just go to bed already.”
Teddy opened his mouth in disbelief. “Is it because you want to 49 Mom?” he asked.
“That’s what Tim said adults do when their kids are sleeping,” he added, seeing the confusion on his parents’ faces.

I did, too. I think it ended up with someone getting a black eye.

Well, that was unexpected. I actually like the historical 49ers–I wrote two novels about the California they created. But kids do say things like that. My son once retold a joke at the dinner table about oral sex that it was obvious he had no idea what he was talking about. Made for a very awkward moment.

Mortifying. But you just need to keep it straight not to make it into a scene.

And yes, it’s good to know a bit of background of the name that SF’s football team got.

Kids are the best, and their instinctive timing can’t be beaten: you captured it perfectly.

Showing my ignorance now: DuckDuckGo led me to a wikipedia page on the San Francisco 49ers, but I’m no sports fan, and I have really no clue what it might mean to be a ’49er’. As for ’49-ing one’s mum’, I can only guess, judging by cathleentownsend’s comment, that it may be a sexual reference of some sort.

My first thoughts when I hear 49 is the SF football team. However, there is a back story to that. https://www.thoughtco.com/going-to-california-49ers-gold-rush-3893676 I really wasn’t inspired to write about football or gold, so I thought of 69 instead.

Thanks for that link, an interesting tale. I find it especially interesting as it illustrates the lunacy of greed; “one in every five miners who came to California in 1849 was dead within six months” is one quote from that article. And it’s sad and ironic that Sutter, the one who first struck gold, did not himself profit from the discovery in the end.
A tad surprising that with a name like Goldie, you aren’t inspired to write about it 😉
Ah! ’69’! Yes, I understand that, and, now, the confusion on Teddy’s parents’ faces becomes clear. Colour me stupid 😉

I’m glad I was able to lead you out of the woods.
Hahha, funnily enough, there is a different post coming up Thursday that pertains to my name.

Ha, ha! I bet that startled his parents! It’s tough being a kid and hearing adults talk in code. Great take on the prompt Goldie! You wrote golden!
