Last weekend I managed to drag my partner out to a water park, after not being to one for over a decade. It was my goal to feel a little bit of adrenaline associated with various crazy slides. That goal was achieved. What was also achieved was the both of us having fun. We felt like kids, which I think is necessary for an adult sized sanity.
The only draw back to it all were the crazy long lines for all the attractions. But after realizing that there was nothing I could do, I just focused on the fun, and not on the lines.
Swimming is something I have always enjoyed, but was not able to do much of. Public indoor pools are not my thing. Paying for a club membership just to use an indoor pool does not seem right for me, either. The summers are usually too short, and the outdoor pools are too crowded in the summer for me to enjoy. However, now that summers are longer where I live, and outdoor pools are not too hard to come by, I decided to swim on a more regular basis. And this week that is exactly what I have been doing.
It is just so relaxing to lay on the surface and just breathe.
And then, the swimming part is great, too. I helps relax my strained muscles, while it builds and tones others.
All of that made me think back to my first time at the pool. No, not really. You should know by now that I do not really remember much of my “firsts”. But I do remember when I decided to teach my younger sibling how to swim.
I nearly drowned them.
I nearly drowned both of us while I was trying to play a “Baywatch” lifeguard.
It was hilarious.
No, not really. At least not in the moment.
It made me realize that I was not an expert on swimming, teaching how to swim, or saving drowning people.
It scared my sibling. To this day, they are not as confident in the water as I would like them to be. Probably because of that incident.
It also felt embarrassing when all this happened in probably 4 ft deep water.
But right now it feels funny. Funny because it is yet another moment with my sibling that I treasure. Another thing we can reminisce about. “Remember when we almost drowned?” I am glad we are both alright today.
How good of a swimmer are you?
Do you enjoy being in the water?
How did you learn how to swim?
Do YOU remember your first time in the pool/ sea/ ocean/ etc.?
Stay golden,

I’m so jealous that you were still able to go swimming! It’s way too cold for that where I live.

I feel you. For the first time in my life I am not complaining about the end of summer in September.
What do you like most about fall?

Well… I guess it’s time to get cosy and cuddly and I don’t really enjoy the extreme heat. So, some days i fall are great temperature-wise. Still, I’d love to go swimming again lol

We always wish what we can’t have. For years I’d spend my summer indoors, but the second it got cooler, I suddenly felt like going swimming.

I was quite old when I took swimming lessons. I must have been 10 or so.
I never liked swimming pools.
I need to be in the salty sea water with a nice environment around me. That gives me ultimate freedom.
I am not a good swimmer however, unfortunately.

I love the ocean views, but I HATE the salt.
When on vacation near the sea, what activities do you perform? Do you swim, or surf, or …?

I float 😉
I don’t do anything crazy or scary.
I actually now live near the sea. I love to take a walk there, also on colder weather.
The city in Denmark we will be living also is near the sea.
I like it a lot 🙂

Floating is awesome!
When I was a kid, I lived close-ish to the mountains. I didn’t appreciate it. I think I would like it now. But, living near the water is the best. Great for swimming, floating, biking, walking, etc.

Oh boy oh boy, water parks are fun! We don’t have pools where I live so I never got to learn how to swim. But I love the ocean. I want to have a boat someday so I could go out anytime I want.
Went to Dorney Park a couple years ago, stuck mostly to the rides until the mega slide. There was lifeguard up top, can’t remember if I told him I couldn’t swim he already looked stressed when he realized I was too blind to see the instructions. Jumped on my inflated donut thing and down I went. I didn’t die, so that’s a plus :p

Hahah, that was pretty funny, but I’m glad to hear that you survived.
Where are you from?

I’m from Guyana, that’s South America. It’s ironic really, I’ve lived all my life on the coast and I’d sink like lead, my parents were super protective. I’d really like to learn how though. And from where do you hail Golden One? I mean, if you don’t mind saying.

USA here. I think you’re the first Guyanese person I met here.
It’s easier to learn when you’re younger, but it’s never too late to take classes.

Went I joined the swimming class, I drowned 😭
I left the class and never went back.

Do you live far from the coast? Away from water?

Now??
Yes we had to move, cause of my fear. 😭

Really? That’s quite an influence you have on your parents.

As a child, I grew up on a river. One day my father took me to the end of the dock and threw me in. I learned to swim very quickly that day.
I do not like public pools. To me, it is like a giant bathtub filled with a bunch of people. I don’t care how many chemicals they put in the water, it’s disgusting. I’d rather swim in a lake with a dead moose floating in it.

Most (all?) my life has been in the city. I did not know how to swim until I went to school, and we had special classes. Then, I went to my grandma’s for summer. A village with a river nearby and all the kids were doing CRAZY things (like jumping in, etc.). I was terrified. But I thought it was good that they learned like you – through survival.
Ha! A dead moose. But yea, I completely understand your reservations.
Are you Canadian?

No, I live in the United States.
Yeah, we did pretty crazy stuff as kids. We would set up a ramp at the end of the dock and jump our bikes off it into the river. If I caught my daughter doing something like that, I’d have a heart attack. Thing were different back then.

Whenever I hear “moose” I think Canada.
Yes, indeed, they were. Good ‘ol times.
Were you ever told: “Wait till you have your own kids” when you complained about something a parent said/ did?

Oh yeah, I heard that a lot.

I love the water, just not beaches. Playtime is important.

It really is. Why not the beach?

Hot, sandy, crowded. Everything that doesn’t seem relaxing to me.

Having a private beach would be super cool.
Sand does get in all the crevices, but I like the texture and the warmth of it.
And oddly enough, heat relaxes me. I looooove saunas.

I am not a strong swimmer but I love the water and I float well.. it’s the witch in me I guess! I don’t care if it’s the ocean, lake, pool, bath or puddle. If it’s wet, I’m in it!

Do you have your broom with you when you go out to those “puddles”?

Your cat can’t swim? Can’t you put a spell on him (put him in a bubble), or something?

Hahaha.. I started swimming when I was six-ish! Thanks to my Papa, who was in the armed-forces – He wanted to teach us things quick! 😉

That’s awesome. I know kids around that age and younger, who swim because of their parents being in the military.
Did you learn in the pool, or in the open water?

We did both – weekdays in pool and weekends by the local canal! What days!✌️😃❤

Um… I was a dive master in my mid 20s. I swim really well from a distance and endurance perspective BUT my technique is awful!! I only know this because my daughter takes classes and the coach screams at the kids when they don’t do something correctly. Let’s just say that if I were in there all you would here is “Christy!!!” 😬😂

That was funny. Probably the same with me. I remember competing, and getting a bronze medal, but I don’t know what happened afterwards. Maybe it’s because mandatory classes ended at school and now my technique is terrible, and so is the speed. But endurance still good.

Endurance is good enough to enjoy a good swim now a days. I hope that you have a great weekend. 😊

Being a dive-master must have been pretty cool. How deep did you go?

It sure was. I remember doing a wreck dive in Miami which was a little over 100 ft. and I think that was my deepest dive.
