CW: January Collection

“Today’s Thursday. Right? Is it?” I sounded like a crazy person.

“Yes, it’s Thursday. Otherwise, we have a problem,” my partner responded without flinching.

Phew, my cover still wasn’t blown. Or maybe people got so used to my crazy that they no longer even blink when in its presence.

“I never published my post for today,” I cried out.

There is a lot I juggle. Even though I keep eating, it’s as if whatever is on my plate keeps multiplying. No rest for the wicked. But, I know I’m not the only one. Most of you probably feel like you’re in the same boat. Let’s hope we won’t capsize because there probably aren’t enough life vests.

With all that said and done, I’d like to share with you some of my short pieces I penned this month that I have not posted on here.

***

TITLE: A way to a man’s heart.

Pete was Lucy’s summertime neighbor. Both of their families loved visiting Vallecito Lake to “unplug.” The kids rolled their eyes whenever they heard that term. There was no cable or Internet, so the only thing to do was to go outdoors.

Not wanting to act “like a girl”, Lucy ran through mud, hid behind bushes, and fought with sticks as swords.

After a couple of summers, she developed a crush on Pete.

“What pretty butterfly,” she mused, just before smashing it with a rock.

She read somewhere that butterfly dust was a key ingredient in a love potion.

TITLE: Life Reel

“Your whole life flashes before your eyes,” people say when describing near-death experiences.

It didn’t when that Ford rammed into my Nissan.

Instead, my brain focused on the auditory stimuli around me.

The sound of music on the radio disappeared, replaced by a bang from nowhere, and the crunching of metal.

“Fuck!” I just had my car fixed up.

“Are you bleeding?” one of the five people outside my window asked.

Where did they come from?

“No,” I answered without checking.

Today, I took my first step. It’s a long way to go, but I’m on the right path.

TITLE: When I grow up.

It was the night before Halloween when Stephanie realized Tommy needed a costume for school the next day.

“We need to create a costume. What do you want to be?” she asked, frantically rummaging through her arts and crafts bin.

“I want to be like Daddy!” Tommy buzzed excitedly.

Steve grinned with pride. Being a police officer had been a family tradition for generations.

Tommy disappeared from the kitchen to return wearing a black ski mask.

Stephanie and Steve froze, mortified.

“I saw you last night wearing this, telling Mom how much fun you had. I like having fun!”

  1. I liked the first one the best. Great twist. I began by wondering “Well, now, what’s this one about? An undercover cop, afraid for his/her life, speaking in code?” Only to ultimately discover: “wait, that’s not an undercover cop at all… it’s Goldie!” 😝

      1. You’re welcome. 😊 Been okay. Up and down, though I did help finish building a bookshelf earlier this month, so that was cool. Of course, by “finish building” I actually mean “helped stain,” but it was nice to be able to assist at all. Especially since I was the one slated to profit from the project anyway. And now, I can slightly more confidently declare that it is indeed “my” bookshelf.
What about you? How’s 2021 treating you so far?

  2. I also like the first story the most.
In fact, I’d say it is the very definition of your writing style.
Or actually, you are very versatile, but it’s the type of style I prefer the most.

Was there a reason why you didn’t post these throughout the month, separately?

    1. Thanks, Andrea! I appreciate your feedback. I like these twisty little things quite a bit myself, but they don’t always come around easily.

No particular reason. However, since my posts are usually 1k, I often squirm when I post the 99 words ones.

  3. Sometimes, holding onto the day is challenging. Better late than never 🙂

I love the coloured blocks. New idea to steal 😂

I like Lucy but apparently, the line between “hopeful witch” and “psychopath” is a narrow one.

With “Life Reel”. I liked it up until the last block. Now I’m confused. Was today the first day of abstinence (like AA) and getting in a car accident sober is ironic?

“When I Grow Up.” Bwa hahaha. Kids.

A great read with my Friday morning coffee. Nice.

    1. Thanks for mentioning the colored blocks. I wasn’t sure how they’d come through. I just had to separate the stories and the intro, and the prompts, etc. and this seemed to be the best way.

Hahah! Yes, It’s a fine line between light and dark witch.

I can see how the “Life Reel” can be confusing. There was supposed to be a time lapse between the beginning and the last line. Your interpretation is intriguing. When I wrote it, I thought of a person getting mangled in a car crash and today being literally the first day that they were able to get up on their feet. There is hope they will walk again.

Glad I could entertain you a bit. Happy Friday!

  4. I love all four stories, though I love the one about the car accident more. I find it curious that a man’s first thought in the moment if death isn’t that he’s dying, but that the car he’d just fixed has been wrecked again. It says plenty about the character—it says a lot about how materialistic he is. And I won’t be surprised if you fleshed out the story and it turned out that this character also lacks empathy.

  5. Short and sweet! I sort of felt exactly like how you did in the intro throughout this month. For the first time, I realized I was going to meet my own deadlines for my posts and it just kept stacking on until I finally published things hahah Life can get hectic when you least expect it! 😮
